So, I’ve been messing around with this 2004 GSX-R 600 lately, and let me tell you, it’s been a ride. I picked it up a few weeks ago, and it’s one of those bikes that just feels right, you know? It has taken all the abuse I can throw at it, so it is still a good buy.

I started by giving it a good once-over. Checked the oil, which looked pretty clean, and topped off the fluids. The tires were a bit worn, so I swapped those out for some new rubber. Feels much better now, especially when leaning into those curves.
- Oil check: Looked good, just topped it off.
- Tires: Replaced with new ones.
- Fluids: Topped off all the essential fluids.
Next up, I took it for a spin around the block. The engine purred like a kitten, and the throttle response was snappy. I noticed that there was someone listed for sale with 70,000 miles, so I guess it should only need the valve clearance checked at that mileage, pretty solid for a bike this age. But being a bit of a perfectionist, I decided to dig a little deeper.
I pulled off the fairings and started inspecting everything. The air filter was a bit dirty, so I cleaned that out. Then, I checked the spark plugs, and they were a little fouled, so I replaced those. It’s amazing what a difference a few small things can make.
- Air filter: Cleaned it out.
- Spark plugs: Replaced them.
With the basics covered, I moved on to the more fun stuff. I installed a new exhaust system, and man, does it sound sweet now! It’s got that deep, throaty growl that just makes you want to rev it up. I also added some frame sliders, just in case I ever lay it down. Better safe than sorry, right?
After all that, I took it out for a proper ride. I hit up some twisty back roads, and this thing handled like a dream. It’s so nimble and responsive; it felt like an extension of my own body. Compared to other bikes I’ve ridden, like the Kawasaki Ninja 400 and Yamaha YZF-R3, this one has more power, making it way more fun.

- Exhaust system: Installed a new one, sounds amazing.
- Frame sliders: Added for protection.
I’ve been riding it almost every day since, and I’m still loving it. It’s just one of those bikes that puts a smile on your face every time you ride it. If you’re looking for a solid sportbike that won’t break the bank, I highly recommend checking out a 2004 GSX-R 600. You won’t be disappointed.
Riders’ rating is about 79.6 out of 100.0
I’ve seen some reviews online, and most folks seem to agree. One guy even said he’s put over 95,000 miles on his, and it’s still running strong. That’s some serious longevity right there.
Overall, I’m super happy with this bike. It’s been a blast to work on and even more fun to ride. I can’t wait to see what other adventures we have together. Today the GSX-R600 is as good as ever.
