Well, let me tell ya ’bout this fella, Daniel Opare. Sounds like a fancy name, don’t it? He’s one of them football players, y’know, the kind that run around kickin’ a ball on the TV.
They say he’s from Ghana, that’s way over in Africa, ain’t it? Born back in 1990, so he’s gettin’ on in years for a footballer, I reckon. Thirty-three, they say. My grandson’s about that age, always runnin’ around too, but mostly after them chickens in the yard.
This Opare fella, he plays right-back. Now, I don’t know much about football, but I figure that means he’s supposed to stop the other team from scorin’. Like a good fence keepin’ the cows in the pasture, ya see? He’s played for a bunch of teams, they got a whole list of ’em. Seraing, they call one of ’em. Sounds like somethin’ you’d shout when you stub your toe, don’t it?
- They say he’s pretty good, this Opare. Fast, they say. Like a jackrabbit, I guess.
- And he can kick that ball real good too, crossin’ it to his teammates, whatever that means.
- Folks even called him one of the most excitin’ teenagers back in the day. Imagine that! A teenager bein’ famous for kickin’ a ball.
He’s not a big fella, only about five foot nine, or somethin’ like that. That’s in them new measurements, mind you. In good ol’ feet and inches, I ain’t so sure. But they say he’s quick, and that’s what matters in football, I hear. Uses his right foot mostly, just like my old man used to chop wood, right-handed he was, strong as an ox.
They got all sorts of numbers for these fellas, stats they call ’em. How many games they played, how many goals they scored, all that jazz. I don’t pay much mind to that, long as they play hard and don’t cause too much trouble, that’s good enough for me. Seems like this Opare fella played a fair bit, runnin’ up and down that field.
He even plays for his country, Ghana. That’s a big deal, I reckon. Like representin’ your whole family at the county fair, only bigger. Lots of folks watchin’ ya, expectin’ ya to do good. He wears number 40 on his shirt, probably ’cause his lucky number, or somethin’. My lucky number is seven, always has been, ever since I won that pie eatin’ contest back in ’62.

Now, I ain’t never seen him play, this Opare fella, but from what they say, he’s a good one. Works hard, runs fast, and kicks that ball real good. And he’s from Ghana, way over in Africa. It’s a small world, ain’t it? You can be sittin’ here in your rocking chair, and watchin’ a fella from halfway across the world kick a ball on the TV.
They got websites and all sorts of places where you can find out more about him. Flashscore, Soccerway, they call ’em. Full of numbers and stats and all that. I don’t understand half of it, but the young folks seem to like it. Me, I prefer sittin’ on the porch, watchin’ the birds and sippin’ on some sweet tea.
So, that’s about all I know ’bout this Daniel Opare fella. A football player from Ghana, plays right-back, runs fast, and kicks good. He’s getting’ on a bit now, but still playing I reckon. Hope he does well, wherever he is. And that’s the long and short of it.
