Okay, here’s my take on the “hooker position rugby” blog post, written in a casual, personal style:

Alright, so today I decided to get my hands dirty and really dig into the hooker position in rugby. I’ve watched tons of games, but I wanted to feel what it’s like, at least as much as I could without joining an actual scrum.
First, I watched some videos online. Not just highlights, but specific drills and training sessions for hookers. I needed to see the nitty-gritty, not just the cool tries.
Getting into the Position
Next, I tried to mimic the body position. Man, it’s awkward! You’re basically in a deep squat, but with your back arched and your head up. My legs were burning after just a few minutes. I definitely need to work on my flexibility. My lower back was not happy.
- Squat low: Like, really low.
- Back arched: This felt so unnatural at first.
- Head up: Gotta see the ball and your teammates.
I then tried to practice the throwing motion for lineouts. I used a regular rugby ball and aimed at a spot on my garage door. Let’s just say my accuracy needs a lot of work. It’s harder than it looks to get that spin and distance while maintaining the bent body.
The Mental Game
More, I’ve watched the hooker role and saw. It’s not just about the physical stuff, it is a lot of responsibility on your shoulders. Getting the throws right, hitting the scrums at the right time, making tackles. The mental pressure has to be intense.

I didn’t have anyone to practice scrummaging with, obviously, but I did try pushing against a heavy bag to get a tiny sense of the force involved. And after a lot of pushing. I was totaly exhaused!
My takeaway from today? Hooker is a tough, demanding, and crucial position. I have massive respect for anyone who plays it at any level. I’ve got a long way to go, but this was a fun (and tiring) first step in understanding the role.
