Okay, so today I wanted to try out this “omoplata” thing I saw in a UFC fight. I’m no expert, just a regular guy who likes to mess around and try new moves. So, I grabbed my brother – he’s always game for a bit of roughhousing – and we headed to the living room.

Getting Started
First, I watched a couple of videos online. It looked kinda complicated, all these twists and turns, but the basic idea seemed to be trapping the opponent’s arm and using your legs to crank their shoulder. Easy peasy, right? Wrong.
The Messy Part
- I started in the guard position, me on my back, my brother in between my legs.
- Then, I tried to control his right arm, kinda like I was setting up for a triangle choke.
- This is where things got tricky. I attempted to swing my left leg over his shoulder, aiming to trap his arm.
- My brother, being the helpful sibling he is, immediately started squirming.
- I lost my grip a few times, ending up in some weird, tangled positions. We were basically wrestling like kids at this point.
A Glimmer of Success
After a few more clumsy attempts, I finally managed to get my leg over his shoulder and trap his arm. I felt a bit of a stretch in his shoulder, but it wasn’t exactly the picture-perfect omoplata I’d seen online.
I briefly try to apply some pressure by pulling his trapped arm but failed.
The Aftermath
We laughed it off, and my brother admitted he felt a little something, but it definitely wasn’t a submission-level hold. I guess I need a lot more practice. Or maybe a real instructor. But hey, it was a fun way to spend an afternoon, and I definitely got a workout. I’ll keep trying, though – maybe one day I’ll actually pull off a proper omoplata. For now, it’s back to the drawing board (or, you know, YouTube tutorials).
