So, I was scrolling through some stuff online the other day, just killing time. Saw some highlights, probably sports clips, wasn’t really paying super close attention. Then later, maybe it was a conversation I half-heard, the name “Derrick Jones” came up linked with UFC. And my brain kinda went, “Huh? Derrick Jones? In the UFC? Really?”
It sounded a bit off. I mean, I follow MMA, not hardcore, but I know most of the bigger names. Derrick Jones didn’t ring a bell in that context. So, I figured, okay, maybe he’s a new guy, or maybe I just missed something huge.
Digging In A Bit
Got curious. You know how it is. Had to check it out. So I sat down, pulled up my browser. First thing I typed was exactly that: “Derrick Jones UFC”.
The results started popping up. And straight away, it was weird. Lots of pictures of this guy, yeah, but he was… well, he was dunking a basketball. Like, crazy athletic dunks. NBA stuff kept showing up. Dallas Mavericks. Chicago Bulls before that. Slam Dunk Contest winner.
Okay, hold on. This wasn’t adding up.
I changed my search. Tried things like:

- Derrick Jones fighting career
- Is Derrick Jones Jr a UFC fighter
Nothing. Zilch. Nada. All the results pointed back to basketball. Derrick Jones Jr., the high-flying NBA forward. No mention of octagon cages, weigh-ins, fight camps, none of that UFC life.
The Light Bulb Moment
And then it clicked. Simple as that. Someone, somewhere, must’ve gotten things mixed up. Or maybe I totally misheard or misread something in the first place. It happens, right? You see a name known for explosive athleticism, maybe your brain just slots it into a different explosive sport.
So, yeah. Derrick Jones Jr. – amazing athlete, incredible hops, definitely knows how to put on a show. But that show is on the basketball court, not in the UFC octagon. He’s all about hoops, not hooks.
