Alright, so I decided to give this ‘dañis’ thing a try. Heard about it from somewhere, can’t remember where exactly, maybe online or someone mentioned it in passing. Sounded kinda interesting, you know? Something different.

First step was figuring out what the heck it actually was and how to make it. Spent a good while searching around. Wasn’t straightforward, lots of confusing bits and pieces. Finally found something that looked like a decent set of instructions. Seemed doable, at least on paper.
Next, I had to get the ingredients. Made a list and went to the shop. Most stuff was easy to find, your usual flour, sugar, whatever. But there was this one thing… took me ages to locate it. Almost gave up, but found it tucked away on a bottom shelf.
Getting Started (The Messy Part)
Got back home, all ingredients ready. Cleared off the kitchen counter, washed my hands, felt like I was ready to actually do this thing. Pulled out the bowls and started measuring things out. Following the recipe, step by step. Or at least, I tried to.
Things got messy pretty fast. Flour ended up, well, everywhere. On the counter, on the floor, pretty sure I had some on my face too. Mixing the dough was… an experience. Sticky stuff. Wasn’t sure if I was doing it right. The instructions said ‘knead until smooth’, but mine just felt like a sticky blob.
First Attempt: Not Great
Anyway, I shaped them, or tried to make them look like the pictures I saw. They looked a bit sad, honestly. Popped them in the oven, set the timer, and hoped for the best.
- The smell from the oven was… okay? Hard to tell.
- Waited anxiously.
- Timer went off. Pulled them out.
Yeah, they didn’t look good. Kinda flat, a bit burnt on the edges. Tasted one after it cooled down a bit. It was… edible? Barely. Definitely not what I was hoping for. A bit disappointing, gotta say.
Round Two: Trying Again
Cleaned up the mess, which took a while. Felt a bit defeated but thought, hey, might as well try again tomorrow. Can’t get worse, right? Read the instructions again, maybe I missed something obvious.
Next day, I tried to be more careful. Measured everything super precisely. Mixed it a bit differently this time, maybe added a tiny bit more liquid. The dough felt slightly better this time around. Still messy, but manageable.
Shaped them again. Still looked wonky, but maybe less sad? Into the oven they went. Watched them like a hawk this time.

Pulled them out. Okay, visually, a slight improvement! They had a bit more shape. Let them cool. Took a bite.
Result: Still not perfect, not by a long shot. But definitely better than the first disaster. Actually tasted alright. Progress, I guess!
So yeah, making dañis is harder than it looks. Definitely need more practice. But it was interesting trying it out. Learned a few things, mostly about how much mess I can make. Might try again sometime, see if I can actually nail it.
