Man, thinking back to 2015… that Kentucky Derby. It kinda sticks out for me, not ’cause I’m some huge horse racing guy, but because that was the year I actually decided to, like, properly try and figure out the betting thing.

Before that, it was just names in a paper, maybe throw a buck on a funny name if I was at a party. But 2015, I dunno, I had some time, thought I’d actually look into it. So, I got on the computer. Started trying to make sense of the odds, the past performances. Honestly? It was mostly gibberish to me at first. All these numbers, stats, trainer histories… my eyes glazed over pretty quick.
Getting Down to It
I spent maybe an hour clicking around. Felt like I was studying for a test I didn’t sign up for. Found some sites talking up this one horse, American Pharoah. Seemed like the big favorite, which usually means you don’t win much, right? But people were really hyped.
Here’s what I kinda gathered, bullet point style, just trying to simplify it in my head:
- Looked up the jockey, Victor Espinoza. Seemed like he knew what he was doing, won before.
- The trainer, Bob Baffert, big name. Okay, good signs.
- Read some predictions. Lots of folks saying this horse was the real deal.
So, I decided, screw it. Instead of trying to be clever and find some long shot based on zero knowledge, I’ll just go with the crowd. Put down twenty bucks on American Pharoah to win. Wasn’t gonna break the bank, just wanted to feel like I was part of it, you know?
Watching the Race
Then came race day. Found it on TV. It’s funny, the whole thing is over in like, two minutes. All that buildup, the fancy hats, the talk… and then bam, it’s done. I actually watched, focused. Saw my horse, tracked him around the track. He pulled it off! Came through in the stretch.

Felt kinda cool, winning. Didn’t win a fortune, maybe got back like sixty bucks or something? Enough for pizza and beers, which was nice. But the main thing was, I actually followed through on trying to understand it a little, picked the winner, and saw it happen. Made the whole thing more engaging than just hearing about it later.
Haven’t really done much betting since, to be honest. That little experiment scratched the itch. But yeah, 2015 Derby. That was my year for trying to play handicapper for a day. Mostly just proved I should stick to my day job. Still, kinda fun to remember.
