So, I got curious. What’s the big deal? Is it just the actors everyone knows? I decided to spend a bit of time, you know, investigating. Like a personal project, I guess. Started off simple, just typing it into the search box. See what comes up.
Unsurprisingly, it was a lot of famous faces. Actors mostly. You know the ones. Chris Hemsworth, Hugh Jackman, guys like that. Lots of pictures, usually from movies or magazines. Then you get the sort of general ‘type’ – surfers, outdoorsy guys. Lots of beach backgrounds.
I kept scrolling for a while. Looked through image results, read a few forum posts where people were chatting about it. It all felt very… curated? Like looking at a catalogue. You see the same few examples repeated over and over. Made me wonder if it was just a media thing.
Digging Deeper (or trying to)
I tried to find stuff that wasn’t just celebrities. Maybe articles talking about, I don’t know, regular guys? It was harder than you’d think. Everything led back to the famous people or very generic stock photo types.
It actually reminded me of something completely different. A while back, I was trying to fix up an old piece of furniture. Needed a specific type of screw, an old-fashioned kind. Went to the big hardware store, nothing. Went to another, same deal. They all had the new shiny stuff, racks and racks of it, but not the simple, basic thing I needed. Took me ages, ended up finding this tiny, dusty old shop run by an old guy who had jars full of weird bits and pieces. He found it in like two seconds.
My search felt a bit like that. Loads of shiny, polished examples right there in your face, but finding something, let’s say, more down-to-earth or varied? Way harder. You get the impression there’s only one ‘type’ being pushed.
So, yeah. That was my little exploration. Didn’t really reach any grand conclusions. Mostly just confirmed that famous actors are famous. And finding specific old screws is a pain. It was an afternoon spent scrolling, basically.
