So, you hear about these “coach cuts,” right? Sounds like something from a sports team, but let me tell ya, it happens in the regular job world too. I had my own taste of it, and it wasn’t pretty, but well, it was a thing that happened.

I was working at this company, “Innovatech Solutions,” a few years back. Thought I was doing pretty good, you know? Got assigned to this big project, “Project Blueprint,” everyone was buzzing about it. I poured hours into my part, really believed in what we were building. My direct lead, let’s call him Mike – he was the “coach” in this story, I guess. He seemed all for my ideas at first. Lots of “great stuff, keep it coming!”
Then, one Tuesday morning, bam. Mike calls me into his office. No warning, nothing. He’s got this weird look on his face, not quite meeting my eye. He starts talking about “restructuring the approach” for Project Blueprint. Said they needed to “pivot” – love that word, don’t you? It usually means someone’s about to get screwed.
Long story short, my whole section of the project was getting, well, “coach cut.” Not entirely axed, but sliced down so much it was basically a shadow of what it was. My responsibilities? Shifted to someone else, someone newer, someone who probably just nodded and said “yes sir” to whatever Mike wanted. He told me I’d be “reassigned” to “support functions.” Support functions! After I’d practically birthed that part of the project.
I tried to argue, of course. Asked him:
- Why the sudden change?
- What about all the work I’d done?
- Was my performance an issue?
He just gave me a lot of corporate talk. “Strategic realignment,” “optimizing resources,” “synergy.” You know, the usual garbage that means nothing. It was clear the decision was made, and I was just the guy getting the bad news.

Honestly, it felt like a kick in the gut. You go from feeling valued to feeling like a spare part overnight. It wasn’t even about the work itself being bad, it was just… a decision from on high, and I was the casualty. Made me pretty bitter for a while. Walked around like a zombie for a few weeks, just doing the bare minimum in my new “support” role. What was the point, right?
Looking Back At It All
That whole “coach cut” thing at Innovatech, it really opened my eyes. Made me realize that sometimes, no matter how hard you work or how good your ideas are, someone with a bit more stripes on their shoulder can just wipe it all away with a flick of their pen. It’s not always about merit, you know? Sometimes it’s about office politics, or someone’s pet project, or just a manager trying to look like they’re making bold moves.
It took a while, but it pushed me to start looking elsewhere. I wasn’t going to stick around and be someone’s “support function” indefinitely. Eventually, I landed a new gig at a smaller company, “Nexus Dynamics.” More responsibility, more freedom, and funny enough, they actually liked my ideas. I got to build something pretty cool there, something that Innovatech would have probably “coach cut” before it even got off the ground.
I heard later that Project Blueprint at Innovatech ran into a ton of problems after I left my core role. They kept changing direction, overspending, and it never really delivered what they promised. Sometimes I see job postings for my old role there, or similar ones, and the description keeps changing, the pay goes up, like they still can’t figure out what they want. Makes you think, doesn’t it?
So yeah, that was my “coach cut” story. Not fun at the time, but it sure taught me a few things about the way these places work. And hey, I ended up somewhere better, so maybe Mike did me a favor in a weird, twisted way. Still wouldn’t want to go through it again, though.
