You know how it is sometimes, right? You’re just kinda stuck, staring at your rig, and the bands are dead quiet. That was me, last week, I think it was a Tuesday. Just nothing. Absolutely nothing.
And I got to thinking, man, the amount of cash I’ve poured into this ham radio thing. Antennas up the wazoo, transceivers, that ridiculously expensive power supply I convinced myself I needed. It’s a proper black hole for money, I tell ya. And then, bam, it hit me – you know that ‘distracted boyfriend’ meme? Perfect.
So, I thought, ‘Yeah, why not?’ Wasn’t like I was gonna snag some rare DX station anyway. Fired up my ancient laptop, the one that sounds like it’s about to take off. Had to hunt around for one of those free meme generator sites, nothing fancy, mind you.
- Found the template easy enough.
- Figured out the labels. Quick.
- Slapped on ‘Me’, then ‘My Savings’, and of course, ‘Shiny New Radio’.
Honestly, the whole thing took maybe, what, ten minutes? Max. Super, super basic stuff.
It’s kinda funny, isn’t it? We all moan about how much it costs, but then we turn right around and buy more gear. It’s like an addiction, I swear. My other half, she just rolls her eyes. Doesn’t get it at all. ‘Another box with blinking lights?’ she’ll ask. And I’m like, ‘Yep, pretty much.’
Anyway, I cobbled together this silly little picture. Felt like a genius for about five minutes, you know, for my grand artistic effort. So, I chucked it onto a couple of the ham radio groups I’m in online. Wasn’t expecting fireworks or anything.
But then, people started chiming in. ‘Story of my life!’, ‘That’s me next month!’, ‘Hide this from my wife!’ – all that good stuff. Got a few good chuckles out of it, which was the whole point.
Look, it’s just a dumb image with some words on it, at the end of the day. But it’s relatable, you know? We’re all in this together, trying to justify that next antenna purchase to someone. So yeah, that was my big ‘ham meme’ moment for the week. Kept me from going stir-crazy staring at a silent receiver, anyway. Better than static, right?
