Well, let me tell ya somethin’ about these golf clubs, the kind that fella Fred Couples uses. Folks make a big fuss over ’em, but to me, a club’s a club, ya know? You swing it, and the little ball goes flyin’. That’s all there is to it, ain’t it?
But these fancy folks, they got all sorts of clubs. Fred, he’s got a bunch of wood ones, they say. Driver, that’s the one for hittin’ it far, right? Then he’s got a 3-wood and a 5-wood. I reckon those are for hittin’ it a bit less far, but still pretty good. And get this, he’s got three more of them wood-like things, like 4-rescue and 5-rescue, or somethin’ like that. Sounds like a whole forest in his bag!
Now, I ain’t never seen so many wood clubs. Most folks I know, they got some iron ones too. But Fred, he don’t use many irons. The longest one he’s got is a 7-iron, can ya believe it? He says it’s easier on him, I guess. He ain’t gettin’ any younger, that’s for sure. We all get old, even them fancy golfers.

And another thing about Fred, he uses a yellow ball. Says he can see it better. Well, I reckon that makes sense. If you can’t see the ball, you can’t hit it, can ya? It’s as plain as the nose on your face. Some things in life are just common sense.
But the real kicker is, this fella don’t wear no glove! Can you imagine that? Swinging a club with your bare hands. He says it’s ’cause them gloves cost too much money when he was a young’un. Said he’d ruin ’em in the rain, playin’ every day, rain or shine, back in Seattle where it always rains. I tell ya, that’s some dedication. Waste not, want not, that’s what I always say.
So, these Fred Couples golf clubs, they’re somethin’ special, I guess. Lots of wood, not many irons, a yellow ball, and no glove. It sounds like a strange way to play golf, but hey, if it works for him, it works. He’s still out there hittin’ the ball, and that’s what matters.
I seen him on the TV the other day, playin’ at some fancy place. Pebble Beach, they called it. Looked mighty pretty, with the ocean and all. But I bet it’s windy there. That wind can sure mess with your golf ball, make it go all over the place. You gotta be strong to play in the wind.
And Fred, he’s got a caddy, one of them fellas that carries his clubs and tells him what to do. This one’s name is Joe LaCava. They say he’s a good caddy, knows the game real well. But I reckon Fred knows a thing or two himself, been playin’ for a long time.
So, if you’re thinkin’ about gettin’ some new golf clubs, maybe you wanna try Fred’s setup. Get yourself a bunch of wood clubs, a yellow ball, and ditch the glove. But I warn ya, it ain’t for everyone. You gotta be strong and have good eyes, and maybe a little bit crazy, to play golf like that. It’s a young man’s game, they say, but some folks just keep on keepin’ on.
Golf clubs, golf balls, gloves or no gloves… it’s all just a game, ain’t it? Folks get all worked up about it, but at the end of the day, it’s just hittin’ a little ball around a field. But I guess it’s a good way to spend a day, if you ain’t got nothin’ better to do. And it seems like Fred enjoys it, so good for him. He’s earned his keep, that’s for sure.
