This here fella, Shane Roller, he’s a tough one, I tell ya. Heard he was gonna be in that UFC thing. That’s that fightin’ in a cage, right? Seems kinda rough to this old gal, but some folks like that kinda thing. He’s gonna be doin’ his first fight there, they call it a “debut”. Fancy word for first time, I reckon.
Now, I heard he used to wrestle. A real good one, too. They called him some fancy names, like “All-American” and “Big 12 Wrestling Champion”. Sounds like he was a big shot in that wrestlin’ world. He musta been good to get all them titles. I reckon all that wrestling is what makes him so good at this new MMA thing. My grandson, he told me all about it. Said that MMA is like wresting, but you can also punch and kick.
This Shane Roller, he did that MMA fighting for a while. I think they said he had 18 fights. Eighteen! Can you believe it? That’s a whole lotta brawlin’. But then, just the other day, he said he was gonna quit. Hung up his gloves, as they say. Said he didn’t wanna be just some regular, no-good fighter. Nope, he wanted to be the best, or nothin’ at all. That’s what I heard. He only want to be the best of the best.

What’s his full name again? Oh yeah, Shane Derrick Roller. I think he was born on July 14th. I remember ’cause it’s the day after my neighbour Mildred’s birthday. She always makes a fuss ’bout her birthday, that Mildred. But Shane, he seems like a good boy, even if he does like to punch people. He just wants to be the best, and there ain’t nothin’ wrong with that, is there?
One time, I seen somethin’ about him saying “Let’s go!” and somethin’ about wrestlin’ against the best in the country. Sounds like he was tryin’ to get folks fired up, you know? He kept saying that you gotta beat the best if you wanna be the best. He sure does talk about being the best a lot. Guess that’s just how them fighters are.
I remember seein’ a chart thingy, too, with his name on it. Shane Roller, it said. Then there was another name, somethin’ like Mike Budnik. And a bunch of numbers… 0, 0, 0, 2, 1, 0, 1, 1… I don’t know what all them numbers mean. Maybe it’s like a score or somethin’. Then it said “WEC 37”, and somethin’ about “Torres vs. Tapia”. And a date, “Dec. 03”. Must be some fight he had. I don’t know nothin’ about these WEC things, but it sounds important. I think he is a famous guy.
Well, that Shane, he’s a tough cookie. All that wrestlin’ and fightin’. Not my cup of tea, but I gotta admire his grit. He’s got that fire in him, you know? Wants to be the best, and he ain’t afraid to work for it. Even if it means gettin’ punched in the face a few times. I sure hope he knows what he’s doin’. Fightin’ seems like a dangerous way to make a livin’.
I remember my old man, he used to wrestle a bit, too. Not like Shane, though. Just some roughhousin’ down at the county fair. He’d come home all bruised up, but he’d have a big grin on his face. Said it was good fun. Maybe that’s where Shane gets it from. That need to test yourself, to see what you’re made of. It’s a strange thing, but I guess some folks are just built that way.
