That Santa Anita, you know, that horse racing place, it’s something else. I heard it’s been around forever, way out there in California. They call it a “Thoroughbred” racetrack, whatever that means. Sounds fancy, don’t it? They got all them big races, big deals, I reckon. Santa Anita Derby, Santa Anita Handicap, I don’t know what they all mean, but folks sure do get excited about them horses.

This place, Santa Anita Park, it’s in a town called Arcadia. Never been there myself, but I seen pictures. Looks like it’s right up against them big old mountains. They call ’em the San Gabriel Mountains. Imagine that, horses running with them mountains in the back. Must be a sight to see! And it near Los Angeles, that’s where all them movie stars are. Heard they used to film movies at that Santa Anita track. Some movie with Shirley Temple, and one about a horse called Seabiscuit.
They got some big races, one is called the Breeders’ Cup. I think they had it in ’86 and ’93, so some people tell me. Fancy name for a horse race, huh? And they do it in the fall, mostly. Early fall, winter, spring, like that. Horses running all year round, I guess. Even in November!
Some big company owns it, Stronach Group, or something like that. They own other tracks too, like Pimlico, where they have that Preakness race. And Gulfstream Park. I don’t know much about ’em, but they must be big shots to own all them racetracks.
Oh, and I heard they got rules about what you can wear to that Santa Anita place. No shorts or t-shirts. No sandals, and no baseball caps! Imagine that, having to dress up to watch horses run! You can wear jeans, but they can’t be all ripped up or too big. Gotta wear a shirt with a collar, or one of them fancy jackets. They call it a blazer, I think. They want everyone looking all “elegant,” whatever that means.
Some folks say Santa Anita is “The Great Race Place”. Well, I suppose if you like horses and all that, it’s probably a great place. And they got all the news and pictures and stuff about it, if you know where to look. I hear them folks talk about “trainers” and “track records.” Must be important if you’re into that sort of thing.

Don’t need all them fancy words and numbers. But that’s just me. I think it very difficult for me to understand. But it doesn’t matter. I just like watching the horses run.
This Santa Anita track, it’s a whole world of its own. A world of fast horses and big money, I reckon. And it’s been around a long time, so they must be doing something right. Maybe one day I’ll get to see it for myself. But for now, I just gotta picture it in my head. Them horses running, them mountains in the back, all them people dressed up fancy. It’s a long way from here, that’s for sure.
