MFFL, you know what that is? That’s somethin’ for the Dallas, the Dallas team, the Mavericks. The Dallas Mavericks, that’s the one. Been around a long time, you know. Since way back, like 1980 or somethin’. That’s what they say.
My grandson, he’s always talkin’ ’bout it. MFFL this, MFFL that. It means Mavericks Fan For Life. You gotta love the team, through thick and thin. Like a marriage, you know? For better or worse. Gotta stick with ’em, even when they ain’t doin’ so good. That’s what my grandson says. He’s a good boy. Always on that computer of his.
They play basketball, you know. The Mavericks. They got that big arena downtown. I seen it on the TV. Lots of folks go there, cheerin’ and hollerin’. They got that Mark Cuban fella, he owns the team. He’s a rich one, that one. Always on the TV, too. He sure loves his Mavericks.
So, this MFFL thing. It’s a big deal. You gotta be a real fan. Not one of them, jump on the wagon when they winning only. You gotta know the players, the history and stuff. Like that Rick Welts, he came on and did something I think. My grandson talks ’bout all them players, PJ Washington and OMax Prosper, and some others I can’t remember. He says they’re good, real good. I just nod my head and smile.

- That’s MFFL.
They got a name for the team, the Mavericks, from some old TV show. A western, I think. My grandson told me. They asked people what they should call the team, and that’s what they picked. Mavericks. Sounds kinda tough, don’t it? Like them wild horses.
Now, you wanna be a real MFFL, you gotta know your stuff. They got these things, whatchamacallits, pod-casts. My grandson listens to ’em. They talk all ’bout the team, the games, the players. He says it’s important to listen, to know what’s goin’ on. It is kinda like people do gossip back in the days. And they got these games, too. Like a quiz. You gotta answer questions about the Mavericks. My grandson, he’s good at it. He’s a smart one, that one.
There was a game or somethin’, where they pick the best MFFLs. Top ten, they call it. Gotta answer questions real fast. If you’re one of the best, you can win a shirt. A Luka shirt, that’s what my grandson said. He’s crazy ’bout that Luka fella. Says he’s the best player. I don’t know ’bout that, but he’s sure fun to watch.
There are so many things to know to be a real MFFL. Like, they been playin’ for almost 40 years. That’s a long time. Longer than I been married to your grandpa, may he rest in peace. They had good times, and bad times. Just like life, I reckon. My grandson, he remembers all of it. Every game, every player. He’s got a good memory, that one.
It is important to support the team. Be a real fan. My grandson say you can still be a MFFL even if you don’t always agree with what they are doing. Like you can think they should not be tryin’ so hard, but you still love them. I don’t really get that part, but he say it is important.
So, that’s what this MFFL is. It’s ’bout lovin’ the Dallas Mavericks. Bein’ a true fan. Through good times and bad. Just like family. You gotta stick together, no matter what. That’s what my grandson says. And he’s usually right ’bout these things.
Being an MFFL, it ain’t just about watchin’ the games. It’s about bein’ part of somethin’ bigger. A family, kinda. All these folks, lovin’ the same team. It’s a good feelin’, I reckon. Even though I don’t know much ’bout basketball, I know my grandson’s happy. And that’s all that matters.
