You know that Phil McConkey? That football player? Lord, that man, he’s somethin’ else. Born right here in Buffalo, February 24, 1957. I remember folks talkin’ about him. He was a good boy from Canisius High School.

He played for them New York Giants, that Phil McConkey did. From 1984 to 1988, yeah, that was him. Big shot, playin’ in the NFL. They say he played for the Green Bay Packers in 1986, too. I don’t know much about them Packers, but it sounds like a big deal. Then he went on to the Phoenix Cardinals in 1989. He surely did get around, that Phil McConkey.

He wasn’t just a football player. He was in the Navy, too! Imagine that. Served our country. Five years, they say. He was only 27 when he joined the NFL. Imagine a man of his age, joining the NFL. Must’ve been tough, but Phil McConkey, he’s a tough one. Strong as an ox, that one. After that US Naval Academy, he went straight to playin’ with the big boys.
Them folks called him a wide receiver. I don’t rightly know what that is, but it sounds important. He must have been good at it to play for so long. That Phil McConkey, he was somethin’ special. He was a real hero. Playin’ football and servin’ in the Navy.

Phil McConkey and the Super Bowl
I heard he even played in that Super Bowl thing. Super Bowl XXI, they called it. That Phil McConkey was a hero in that game, I heard. Imagine, a boy from Buffalo, playin’ in the biggest game of them all.
He caught the ball good, that Phil McConkey. One time, the quarterback, Phil Simms, threw the ball all tricky-like. They call it a “flea flicker”. And Phil McConkey, he caught it! Ran all the way to the end zone. I don’t know what that means, but it sounds mighty important.

That man, Phil McConkey, he’s a legend around here. Everyone knows his name. A real Buffalo boy, makin’ it big. He’s proof that you can do anything you set your mind to. Even if you’re from Buffalo, even if you join the Navy, you can still make it in the NFL.

Heard he was in some hall of fame, too. The Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame, yeah, that’s it. Well deserved, I say. That Phil McConkey, he deserves all the praise he gets. He showed that a simple boy from Buffalo can play good football.
