Well, let me tell you, this old gal’s heard a thing or two about them golf courses. Ain’t just one kind, you know. There are many different golf course types. Nope, they got all sorts, just like there are many kinds of taters.

Links Golf Courses
First, they got these ones called links courses. Now, these are the ones right by the big ol’ ocean. Lots of wind, and the ground ain’t all flat and pretty like some others. It’s bumpy and lumpy, like an old quilt. They say the word “links” comes from some old word meaning “rising ground” or “ridge”.
These links courses are the old-fashioned type, all natural-like. They were not built by people, but shaped by nature. They require the players to think twice before they make the shot.
- Right by the ocean, these are.
- Windy as all get out.
- Ground’s all bumpy, not smooth.
- Oldest type of golf course, they say.
Desert Golf Courses
Then, you got these desert courses. Now, these are just what they sound like – right smack-dab in the middle of the desert! Hotter than a furnace out there. They got more sand and rocks than the desert. Only a little grass is on the ground, just enough for the players to walk on. And you can see them cactus everywhere.
You find these a lot out west where it’s dry as a bone, like in the Middle East, or somewhere else in the world where there are deserts. These desert golf courses are built in the desert with sand dunes and everything. They are not easy to play on, as the players need to consider heat and elevation changes.
- Hotter than a two-dollar pistol.
- Lots of sand, not much grass.
- They call it a “desert” for a reason.
- Players should bring a lot of water.
Parkland Golf Courses
Now, these parkland courses, these are the ones you see a lot. They’re all green and pretty, with trees and ponds and such. They look like, well, a park! They ain’t by the ocean, and they ain’t in the desert. They’re just regular-like, you know?

They got nice, flat fairways, not bumpy like those links courses. These are more like what folks think of when they think of golf. These parkland golf courses are mostly inland. They are built on ground where there are more plants and water sources. These courses are more popular among people.
- Lots of green grass everywhere.
- Trees and ponds, pretty as a picture.
- Flat fairways, easy to walk on.
- Most common type, I reckon.
Other Golf Courses
There are other golf course types, too. Some of these courses are even built on mountains. People need to take a cable car to reach them. These mountain golf courses are beautiful as a painting. But people need to be really careful not to fall off the cliff. Then there are some courses, called heathland golf courses, that are built on land with not too much water. These heathland courses are built on areas that are covered with shrubs, and small trees.
And get this – they even have golf courses made out of sand! Not just the bunkers, mind you, the whole dang course! They call them sand courses. Can you imagine? All that sand, everywhere. Seems they’re mostly in places with a lot of, well, sand. Like the desert, but the whole thing is sand. These sand golf courses are popular in the Middle East.
So, you see, there’s more to golf courses than meets the eye. They ain’t all the same, no sir. Each one’s got its own thing going on, its own way of being. Just like folks, I reckon. Each one’s different, but each one’s got something to offer.
I’ve heard tell that some folks like the links courses best ’cause they’re a challenge. Others like the parkland courses ’cause they’re pretty and easy on the eyes. And some folks, bless their hearts, even like those desert courses in all that heat and sand. They must have good tolerance to the heat.

Me? I don’t play golf myself. Too old for all that running around. But I’ve seen enough of them on the TV to know that they ain’t all the same. There are many different golf course types. And that’s just the way it is. It’s a big world out there, and there’s room for all kinds, I reckon. Even golf courses. They are all different depending on the location and land.
Whether it’s those ocean links courses, or those hot desert courses, or those pretty parkland courses, they all got their own thing. And that’s alright. Variety is the spice of life, as they say. Even for golf courses. So next time you see a golf course, you think about that. Think about all the different kinds there are out there. And maybe, just maybe, you’ll appreciate it a little bit more. Even if you don’t play golf. Like me. Nope, I just like to watch it on the TV sometimes. When there’s nothing else on. Or when the grandkids come over. They like to watch it. Keeps ’em quiet for a while. Which is nice. Sometimes. When you need a little peace and quiet, you know? Yep, that’s what I say. Peace and quiet. That’s what an old gal needs sometimes.
