Okay, so, I’ve been wrenching on my GSX Suzuki 650 lately, and man, it’s been a ride. I wanted to share my experience, maybe it’ll help someone out there, or maybe you guys can tell me I’m doing it all wrong.

First off, I noticed the bike wasn’t idling right. It was rough, like it was gasping for air or something. I did some digging around online, found some forum posts about similar issues. It got me thinking about the IAP sensor. Then I remembered I’d seen some similar issue happen with another friend’s bike.
So, I unplugged the IAP sensor. I figured, what’s the worst that could happen? And sure enough, it didn’t get much worse, so then I tried to run it. It seems like the ECM defaults to some kind of basic setting when you do that.
Troubleshooting
- Started with the basics: Checked the air filter, it was pretty dirty. Cleaned it out, but that didn’t fix the idling problem.
- Moved on to spark plugs: They were a bit worn out, so I replaced those. Still no luck with the idle.
- Then I got to the IAP sensor. It did not look good. I tried to unplug it, and re-plug it, still got worse.
But that wasn’t the only thing. I also noticed it was pulling pretty badly when I hit higher speeds. It felt like I was losing power, and honestly, it was a little scary. I even started to hear some weird noises, like the bike was singing a sad song, probably some fuel vapor issue.
I’ve heard people talk about over-revving causing damage, and I’m definitely guilty of pushing it to the redline sometimes. So, I’m starting to wonder if I messed up the engine, maybe even the clutch. Maybe I just pushed it too hard this time.
At one point, the dang thing just wouldn’t start. It was like it totally gave up on me. I felt totally lost. So I started checking everything I could think of.

It’s been a headache, but I’m learning a lot. And let me tell you, I’m starting to think I need to lay off the throttle a bit. I am starting to get worried that maybe I am pushing it too hard and did some real damage.
Anyway, that’s my story so far. If anyone’s got any ideas, or if you’ve dealt with something similar on your GSX 650, let me know. I’m all ears! I really need to figure this thing out. Or I need to find someone who can, haha.
