Okay, so I’ve been wanting to try out these TaylorMade P790 irons for a while now. I heard they first came out back in 2017 and were kind of a big deal. I’m not the best golfer, somewhere around a 20 handicap, so I need all the help I can get. I figured, why not give these a shot? They are designed for 12 handicaps, I am not, so I am a bit worried but I will give them a try.

First, I went down to the local golf shop. I grabbed a 7-iron and headed to the hitting bay. I did some warm-up and stretched my body to the best condition. The club felt pretty good in my hands, not too heavy, not too light. It looked nice too, with a clean, classic design.
I started hitting some balls. Man, these things are forgiving! Even when I didn’t hit it perfectly, the ball still went pretty straight and far. They’ve got this hollow body thing and some special foam inside that’s supposed to help with that. I guess it really works!
- Feel: Felt really solid at impact. Not too harsh, not too soft.
- Distance: I was definitely hitting the ball further than with my old irons. Maybe 10-15 yards further on a good hit.
- Forgiveness: Like I said, very forgiving. Even my mishits were playable.
- Look: Really sharp looking clubs. They gave me some extra confidence just looking down at them.
I hit a bunch of balls, trying out different swings, different lies. The more I hit them, the more I liked them. I even tried shaping some shots, drawing and fading the ball. It wasn’t easy, but it was doable, and the P790s responded pretty well. The clubs really launch the ball high. This is great for me because I sometimes struggle to get the ball up in the air. With these, it was no problem. I felt like the ball just exploded off the clubface.
Final Thoughts
After spending a good hour with the P790s, I was pretty much sold. I think they’re going to be my next set of irons. They’re not cheap, but for the improvement I saw, I think they’re worth it. I paid the bill and took them home. I practiced in my backyard for a few more hours.
If you’re a mid-handicapper like me, or even a bit higher, and you’re looking for some new irons, I’d definitely recommend giving the TaylorMade P790s a try. They really helped my game, and they might help yours too. I am so happy that I finally get them. These are great clubs.
