Okay, so I decided to tackle that storage box issue I was having. You know the one, where the lid just didn’t quite sit right? It had this annoying lip, a bit too thick, caught on everything. So, I thought, let’s try this ‘overeem lip cut’ thing I’d been pondering.

First, I grabbed the box lid itself. It’s just one of those standard plastic ones. Then I went rummaging for my utility knife. Found it, but the blade was dull as heck. Spent a good ten minutes swapping that out for a fresh one. Always gotta have a sharp blade, right? Also grabbed a marker and a ruler.
Getting Started with the Cut
So, I laid the lid flat on my workbench. Measured the lip part I wanted gone. Didn’t need much off, just enough so it wouldn’t snag. I marked a line all around the inside edge with the marker. Took my time with this, trying to keep it straight.
Then, the cutting started. Held the knife steady, tried to follow the line. Plastic is tricky sometimes, you know? It can skip or grab. First pass was okay, just scored it really. Went over it again, pressing a bit harder. This is where the ‘overeem’ part kinda happened, not gonna lie.
The Tricky Part
On one corner, the knife dug in a bit deeper than I planned. Sliced right through and took a little extra chunk off the main part of the lid, not just the lip. Ugh. Annoying. That’s the ‘overeem’ for you, I guess. Wasn’t aiming for that, but hey, it happened.

I kept going around the rest of the lip, being extra careful after that slip-up. Finally got the whole strip of plastic off. The edge looked pretty rough, jagged in places, especially where I’d messed up.
Cleaning it Up
The cut edge was nasty. So, I grabbed some sandpaper, started with a coarser grit. Sanded down the sharp bits, tried to smooth out that jagged section from my over-cut. Took a while, going back and forth. Then I switched to a finer grit sandpaper to make it feel a bit smoother to the touch.
- Checked the fit on the box.
- It actually sat much flatter now!
- The over-cut corner wasn’t ideal, looked a bit wonky if you stared at it, but functionally? Much better.
So yeah, that was my adventure with the ‘overeem lip cut’. Started with an idea, gathered my tools, marked it out, did the cutting (with a minor mess-up), and then cleaned up the edges. It’s not perfect, that over-trimmed corner bugs me a little, but the lid works way better now. Doesn’t catch anymore. Job done, mostly.
