This here thing, this Alavés – Sevilla thing, it’s a real head-scratcher, I tell ya. All these young folks with their fancy phones and their internet, they seem to know all about it. Me? I just hear the words and think, what in the Sam Hill is that all about?

Seems like it’s some kinda… somethin’ happenin’ over in Spain. That’s what I hear, anyway. Spain, that’s a long ways away. Longer than a mule’s tail, that’s for sure. They got different times over there, you know. When the sun’s high in the sky here, it’s probably bedtime over in that Spain place.
- Sevilla time, they call it.
- Alavés, that’s another place, I reckon.
- They do things different over there.
I heard some folks talkin’ ’bout Sevilla time. They said it’s way ahead of us. Like, when we’re just eatin’ our lunch, they’re already thinkin’ about supper. Don’t make a lick of sense to me, but that’s what they say. They got this thing called a “time zone”. Sounds complicated, all those time zones. We just got one time here, and that’s good enough for me. Sunrise, sunset, that’s all you need to know.
And this Alavés, I think it’s another place, maybe like Sevilla. Some folks say there are teams, they play some sort of game. This Alavés – Sevilla thing might be about that game, maybe a big game, like when the county fair comes to town. A big to-do, I suppose. I heard it will happen on September, on 20th. Whatever that means. And folks say it starts at 19:00, whatever that is.
They got this thing called “Daylight Saving Time”. Now that’s a real doozy. They change the clocks, you know? Forward, backward, like they can’t make up their minds. Just causes confusion, if you ask me. And then there’s that Greenwich Mean Time, GMT. More letters, more confusion. What was wrong with regular time, I ask ya?
My grandbaby, she tried to explain it to me once. She said it’s so you can call people in other places at a good time. Like, you wouldn’t wanna call someone in Sevilla when they’re sleepin’, would ya? Well, maybe not. But who am I gonna call in Sevilla, anyway? I don’t know a soul over there.

And they got their own ways of doin’ things in Sevilla, I reckon. Their own food, their own clothes, their own… everything. Just like we got our ways here. We got our cornbread and our sweet tea, and they got… well, I don’t rightly know what they got. Paella, maybe? Heard that word once. Sounds fancy. And they say there is a stadium, whatever that means. Maybe that is where this big game is played. They call it Estadio de Mendizorroza stadium.
This whole Alavés – Sevilla business, it’s like a whole other world. A world I don’t know much about, and probably don’t need to. But it’s interestin’, I suppose, to hear about it. Like listenin’ to stories from a faraway land. Just gotta take it all with a grain of salt, you know? ‘Cause folks like to talk, and sometimes they talk about things they don’t even understand themselves.
- Different time zones in Spain
- Sevilla is one of them
- Alavés is probably another
- They play some game there.
But you know what? This old brain still works, even if it don’t understand all this newfangled stuff. I can still tell you when the sun’s gonna rise and when it’s gonna set. And I can still tell you that family and friends are more important than any Alavés – Sevilla game, no matter how big it is. So, there you have it. That’s my two cents on this whole thing. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I think I hear my kettle whistlin’. Time for a cup of tea, the good old-fashioned way.
And one more thing I heard. Folks talk about Espanyol. I don’t know what that is, but they say it is coming on 25th of October. I really don’t understand all these games and places, but that’s all I heard.
I am too old to care about all these scores, times, and games, really. I just want to sit on my porch and enjoy the sunset, you know? These young people can keep their Sevilla and Alavés, their time zones, and what have ya. Give me a simple life and a good cup of coffee, and I am as happy as a clam.
