Okay, so I’ve been on this kick lately, right? Trying to figure out just how tall the average NBA player is. Sounds simple, but trust me, it’s been a journey.

I started off thinking, “I’ll just Google it.” Ha! That’s what everyone would do, yeah? So I typed in “average NBA player height” and, boom, a ton of stuff popped up. But here’s the thing – it wasn’t all saying the same thing.
First, I saw that the average height for point guards is around 6’2.5″, which, okay, that’s pretty tall. But then I dug a little deeper, and some places were saying the overall average for all NBA players is closer to 6’7″. That’s a big difference, right?
Digging into Positions
So, I thought, maybe it’s different for each position. Makes sense, yeah? And yeah, it totally is. Centers are the giants, obviously, usually around 7 feet tall. I saw that they are also typically the strongest and biggest. But then point guards and shooting guards are shorter, but still way taller than your average Joe. Power forwards? They’re somewhere in the middle, like the mediators of the height world.
- Point Guards: Mostly between 5’10” and 6’4″
- Shooting Guards: Similar to point guards, but a bit taller
- Small Forwards: Taller than shooting guards, starting to get up there
- Power Forwards: Now we’re talking, these guys are big
- Centers: The giants, usually around 7 feet tall
Historical Height Changes
Then I got curious about how things have changed over time. Turns out, back in the 1950s, the average height was around 6’4″. So, players have definitely gotten taller over the years. It’s wild to think about how the game has evolved, right?
The Tallest and the Shortest
Of course, I had to find out who the tallest point guard was. I learned that it’s Magic Johnson at a ridiculous 6’8″! Then I saw that Ben Simmons is 6’10”, which is just insane for a point guard. And on the flip side, the shortest players are way shorter than you’d think, some even under 6 feet.

Team Averages
I even looked into which teams are the tallest. It’s the Denver Nuggets, apparently, with an average height of 6’7.9″. Just a bit taller than the league average of 6’6.5″.
So yeah, that’s been my little adventure into the world of NBA heights. It’s way more interesting than you’d think, and it really makes you appreciate the diversity in the game. From the towering centers to the speedy point guards, everyone’s got their role, and it all comes together to make basketball the awesome sport it is.
