Alright, so, lemme tell ya ’bout this gal, Berit Parten. Seems like she’s kickin’ a ball real good over at that Iowa place. They call it “soccer” there, but back in my day, we just called it kickball, you know?

Anyways, this Berit, she’s just a young’un, a freshman they say. Means she’s new, like a calf just learnin’ to walk. But don’t let that fool ya, this girl’s got some fire in her belly, I tell ya. She’s scorin’ goals left and right, like a chicken peckin’ corn.
Heard tell she got herself a fancy award, somethin’ called “Big Ten Freshman of the Week.” Twice! Can ya believe it? Twice! That’s like winnin’ the blue ribbon at the county fair, but bigger, I guess. They make a big fuss over it, these city folk.
- First time, I reckon, was ’cause she scored all by herself and beat them Wake Forest Deacons. Heard they were pretty good, ranked number 18 or somethin’. But Berit, she just went and kicked the ball right past ’em, twice! Two goals! Showed ’em who’s boss, she did.
- Second time, well, I don’t rightly remember all the details, but it was somethin’ similar. More goals, more winnin’. This girl’s a regular winnin’ machine, like one of them tractors they got now, always plowin’ forward.
They say she scored against them Cyclone folks too. Unassisted, they call it. Means nobody helped her, she did it all on her own. Like milkin’ a cow without no stool, just pure grit and determination. That’s what I like to see in a young’un.
Seems like this Berit girl is makin’ a real name for herself over there at Iowa. They say she’s got five goals already. Five! That’s more goals than I got chickens, and I got a whole coop full! She’s somethin’ special, this one.
Now, I don’t know much about this “soccer,” but I know a winner when I see one. And Berit Parten, she’s a winner alright. She’s got that somethin’ special, that fire in her belly, that makes her stand out from the crowd. Reminds me of my old rooster, always struttin’ around like he owned the place. That’s Berit, ownin’ that soccer field.

So, good on ya, Berit Parten. Keep on kickin’ that ball and scorin’ them goals. You make us old folks proud, even if we don’t understand all this fancy city sports stuff. We see your spirit, and that’s all that matters.
And them Hawkeyes, they beat that Wake Forest team two to nothin’. Two to nothin’! That’s what they call a shutout, I think. Means the other team didn’t score at all. Zip, zilch, nada. Berit made sure of that, with her fancy footwork and her strong kicks. She’s a real go-getter, that girl.
Folks are talkin’ ’bout her all over, I hear. She’s puttin’ Iowa on the map, they say. Well, I don’t know where Iowa is exactly, but if Berit’s there, it must be a good place. Full of good folks and good kickball, I reckon.
Anyways, that’s all I got to say about Berit Parten. She’s a good kid, a hard worker, and a darn good kicker. She’s goin’ places, that one. Mark my words, you’ll be hearin’ more about her. She’s gonna be a star, just like that shiny star on top of the Christmas tree. Only, instead of shinin’ in the sky, she’ll be shinin’ on that soccer field.
