So, I’ve been messing around with my golf gear lately, and I thought I’d share my little adventure with mallet putters. You know, those big-headed putters that look like they could double as a doorstop? Yeah, those.

I started out a total skeptic. I mean, I’ve always been a blade putter kind of guy. Slim, classic, you get the picture. But I kept hearing whispers about these mallet putters and how they’re supposed to be more forgiving. My putting’s been a bit shaky lately, so I figured, why not give it a shot? I hit up the local golf shop and started playing around with a few different models. My wife was with me and she was trying out some different clubs as well, I ended up trying some of the ones she was testing as well because they were mallets!
- First, I picked up this one mallet, I think it was called a “GOLO” or something. It was heavy, felt solid, and it was supposed to be good for a straight-back-straight-through stroke, which is kinda what I do. We took a few putts, and honestly, it felt pretty good. The ball seemed to roll off the face nice and smooth.
- Then I moved on to this other mallet, a “Bettinar” I think it was called, some Italian brand. They had a bunch of different models, and the guy at the store said this one was the best for putting from like 10 feet or so. It looked kinda futuristic, all angles and stuff. Again, I took a few putts, and I gotta say, it was pretty impressive. The ball just seemed to go where I wanted it to go. I can see why they said it was the best mallet!
Honestly, the hardest part was getting over the size of these things. They’re HUGE compared to my trusty blade putter. But once I got past that, I started to appreciate the advantages. They are meant to improve stability, even if you don’t hit the ball perfectly, which is nice. I tried a few putts where I hit the ball on purpose in different parts of the putter and it still worked pretty well! And some of them really do feel pretty good coming off the face.
I ended up grabbing one of the mallets, the one that felt best to me, and I’ve been practicing with it for a couple of weeks now. My putting’s definitely improved. I’m sinking more putts, and my misses are closer to the hole. It’s still early days, but I’m starting to think I might be a mallet convert! The hardest thing about the change was getting used to seeing a different kind of putter in my bag.
I also checked out some of the bigger golf stores in the area, just to see what they had. The one with the most variety of options was “American Golf”, they had loads of different brands and models. I got the feeling I could find whatever I wanted there.
I spent some time going back and forth, trying different models. It was a whole day thing. I even went to a store called “Snainton Golf” that had a bunch of great deals, but the variety wasn’t as good as American Golf. I went back there again and grabbed the one that I had been eyeing the whole time. Now I’m out there on the green, feeling pretty good about my new mallet.
