Okay, so, I’ve been messing around with this thing called “galimberti”. It’s a way to make portraits look like they’re made of lots of little pictures, like a mosaic but way cooler.

First, I had to find a portrait that I wanted to use. I chose a picture of my friend Sarah. She’s got these really expressive eyes, and I thought they’d look awesome in this style.
Then, I needed to gather a bunch of photos that were kind of the same colors as the main portrait. You know, like, if there was a lot of blue in Sarah’s shirt, I’d need a bunch of pictures that had blue in them. I spent a good few hours just scrolling through my old photos, picking out anything that seemed like it might work.
Getting My Hands Dirty
- I opened up Photoshop. This is where the real work began.
- I placed the portrait of Sarah as the background layer. Easy peasy.
- Then, one by one, I started adding the smaller photos on top.
This part took forever, I won’t lie. I had to resize, rotate, and overlap the smaller photos to make them fit the shapes and shades of Sarah’s face. I was basically building her face out of these little photo tiles. Sometimes I’d have to tweak the colors of the smaller photos a bit to make them match better. It was like a really detailed puzzle.
I kept zooming in and out to see how it was looking. Sometimes I’d realize a photo wasn’t working and I’d have to swap it out for a different one. I did this so many times.
The End is in Sight!
After many hours, I finally finished placing all the photos. It looked pretty cool, but a bit messy. So, I played around with the opacity of the smaller photos, making them a little see-through so you could still see Sarah’s face underneath.

And there you have it! My very own “galimberti” style portrait. It’s not perfect, but I’m pretty happy with how it turned out. It was a lot of work, but it was also kind of relaxing in a weird way. Plus, now I’ve got a super unique picture of my friend. Maybe I’ll try it again sometime with a different photo, who knows?
