Alright, let’s gab a bit about this… uh… black mesa golf, yeah? That’s what they called it. Never been much for fancy names myself, but folks seem to like it.

So, this golf place, it’s out in some desert. New Mexico, they say. La Mesilla, if I remember right. Hot place, I reckon. But pretty, real pretty. Mountains all around, and not just any mountains, snow on top of ‘em, even when it’s warm down below. Like a picture postcard, my grandson would say. He’s always showin’ me them fancy pictures.
Now, this fella, Baxter Spann, he’s the one who made the place. Drew it all out, I guess. Made it hard, too. Not just some flat field you can whack a ball across. Hills and cliffs, and they say there’s snakes around. Rattlesnakes! Can you believe it? Makes me shiver just thinkin’ about it. But folks seem to like a challenge, so good for them, I guess.
- Tough Course: Not for the faint of heart, this one. Hills and cliffs everywhere.
- Pretty Views: Mountains and deserts, real nice to look at.
- Snakes: Watch out for them rattlers!
They got all sorts of things there, too. Not just golf. Places to eat, places to buy stuff. Pro shop, they call it. Fancy words for things, I tell ya. But they’re nice folks, the ones who work there. Always smilin’ and helpin’ out. Makes a difference, you know?
I heard tell this golf place is kinda famous. People come from all over to play there. California, Wisconsin, even them Carolinas. Must be somethin’ special, huh? They even got this list, a rankin’ they call it, of all the golf places, and this black mesa one, it’s right up there, makin’ a big splash. Good for them, I say. Shows hard work pays off.
This course, it’s got 18 holes, par 70, whatever that means. And get this, it’s way down low, below the sea even. Two hundred and fourteen feet, they said. How can that be? Never seen the sea myself, but I know it’s low. And they got trees there, too. Palm trees and some other kind I can’t remember the name of. Framin’ the fairways, they said. Pretty words, but makes it sound nice.

And you can see the mountains from everywhere on the course. Majestic mountains, they said. Big word, but I get it. They’re grand, them mountains. Makes you feel small, you know? But in a good way.
Now, they got a lot of golf places around Mesa, they say. Twenty-three, or maybe more in the area. That’s a lot of golfin’! Seems like folks like to swing them clubs. Me, I’d rather be in my garden, but to each their own, I always say. My grandson though, he’d like this golf stuff, I bet.
I heard a story once, about some singer, Sinatra, I think his name was. He liked golf, too. Had his favorite place to play, Canyon Country Club, they used to call it. Now it’s Indian Canyons. He liked it ‘cause the fella who worked there, Jack, would play with him. Show him the ropes, I guess. See? Even famous people like to golf.
And there’s this other place, Sedona, they say. Red rocks, real pretty. And golf, too. Seems like you can find golf just about anywhere these days. But this black mesa golf, it seems special. Desert golf, they call it. Sounds hot, but I bet it’s somethin’ to see.
So, that’s all I know about this black mesa golf. Pretty place, hard course, nice folks. If you like golf, you might like it. If you don’t, well, there’s plenty of other things to do. Like tendin’ a garden, or sittin’ on the porch, watchin’ the world go by. That’s more my speed.

But I tell you what, if you go to black mesa golf, you watch out for them snakes! And bring plenty of water, that desert sun is somethin’ fierce. Stay safe, and have fun, that’s what I always say.
