Okay, so I finally got around to playing the Wailua Municipal Golf Course. I’d heard so much about it – super affordable, great ocean views, the whole deal. Let me tell you, it mostly lived up to the hype, but there were a few surprises along the way.

Getting Started
First off, finding the place was easy enough. It’s right there on the coast, can’t miss it. I booked a tee time online a couple of days before, which I definitely recommend doing. It seems like a popular spot, especially on weekends.
I showed up, checked in at the pro shop – the guys there were really friendly and laid-back. Grabbed a scorecard, rented a cart (because, let’s be honest, I’m not walking 18 holes in that Hawaiian sun), and headed to the first tee.
The Course Itself
- First Impression: Wide open fairways. Seriously, you’d have to try pretty hard to lose a ball out there.
- The Greens: This is where things got interesting. They were… bumpy. Not terribly maintained, to be honest. It made putting a real adventure. Let’s just say my short game got a serious workout.
- The Views:Okay the view is very very good. You’ve got the ocean right there, palm trees swaying… it’s pretty hard to complain when you’re golfing in paradise.
- The Pace of Play: It was a little slow, but nothing outrageous. I think there were a few groups of beginners out there, which is totally cool. Everyone’s gotta start somewhere.
The Wildlife
I encounted a few chickens on the golf.
Wrapping Up
After the round, I grabbed a quick bite at the snack bar – nothing fancy, just a hot dog and a soda. Sat outside for a bit, enjoyed the breeze, and reflected on the day.

Overall, Wailua is a great value for the money. Would I say it’s the most pristine, perfectly manicured course I’ve ever played? Nope. But it’s fun, it’s relaxed, and the views are killer. If you’re looking for a no-pressure round of golf in Kauai, and you’re not expecting Augusta National, I’d say definitely give it a shot.
Just be prepared for those greens! I am planning to practice my short game, that’s for sure.
