Oh, that poor boy, that catcher, he done broke his arm! My lord, it was a sight. He’s a big fella, that catcher, always catchin’ the ball. This time, though, somethin’ went wrong. Heard he got hit by a bat. Not just a little tap, mind you. Broke it clean, they say. Poor fella, that’s gotta hurt somethin’ awful. He’s gonna need some help.
They say he’s one of them St. Louis Cardinals. Big team, them Cardinals. I seen ’em on the TV before. Always playin’ that baseball game. He was out there, doin’ his job, catchin’ that ball like he always does. Then, BAM! That bat come swingin’ and got him right in the forearm, they call it. Right in his left forearm. That’s the part of the arm between your hand and your elbow, you know.
Now, that catcher, his name is Willson Contreras. I seen it on the news. Willson Contreras broke his arm, they said. And it weren’t no accident, neither. This other fella, name of Martinez, from the Mets, New York Mets. He was swingin’ that bat, tryin’ to hit the ball, I reckon. But he missed and got poor Willson Contreras instead. They say he was forced to exit the game. Well, of course he was! Can’t play ball with a broken arm, can you?
- That catcher broke his arm.
- He got hit by a bat.
- They call it a fractured arm.
- That’s gotta hurt real bad.
They gonna have to do surgery, I hear. Cut him open and fix that broken arm. That’s what they do nowadays. Back in my day, we just wrapped it up tight and hoped for the best. But they got all these fancy doctors and such now. They can fix anything, almost. They say he’s gonna be alright. Just gotta take it easy for a while. No more catchin’ for him, not for a long time.
I tell ya, that baseball, it’s a rough game. All that runnin’ and throwin’ and swingin’. And sometimes, things like this happen. A catcher breaks arm. It ain’t right, but it happens. You gotta be careful out there. You never know when that bat’s gonna come flyin’ at ya. Or when a ball might come too fast, or you might trip and fall and break somethin’. It ain’t easy. And he needs help.
This Willson Contreras, he’s a tough one, though. They say he’s already tryin’ to get back to playin’. Just a month after he broke his arm! Can you believe it? That’s mighty quick, if you ask me. Most folks would still be sittin’ at home, nursin’ their wounds. But not him. He wants to get right back out there, catchin’ that ball again. The organization is amazed. I don’t know if it’s a good thing or not. He may need more rest.

It’s good to be tough, I suppose. But you also gotta be smart. You don’t wanna rush things and end up hurtin’ yourself even worse. Then you’ll really be in a pickle. Out of the game for even longer. Maybe for good. And nobody wants that. Especially not that catcher. He loves that game, you can tell.
When a catcher try to steal, or a catcher try to do a pickoff, you know it can be dangerous. That’s how things go.
- Willson Contreras, that’s the catcher.
- St. Louis Cardinals, that’s his team.
- Forearm, that’s where he got hit.
- Surgery, that’s what he needs.
- Injury, that’s what they are talking about.
Well, I hope that Willson Contreras gets better soon. I really do. It’s a shame to see a good player like him get hurt. He’s got that injury now. But baseball’s a rough game, and these things happen. You just gotta pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and keep on goin’. That’s what they all say, anyway. And I reckon that’s what he’ll do. He will be on the field again. Just hope he don’t broke his arm again. Poor fella. That’s all I can say. He needs to be more careful.
