Well, let me tell ya ’bout that horse race they had down there, the one they call the Virginia Derby. Happened on September 7th, 2024, just like they said it would. Folks was all excited, ya know, bettin’ their money and whatnot.
The Big Race, That Virginia Derby
So, this Virginia Derby, it ain’t just some small-time thing. They say it’s a Grade 3 race, and that means somethin’ to them horse people. Big money involved, too. Heard tell it was five hundred thousand dollars they was givin’ away. That’s enough to make a fella’s head spin, I tell ya. Now, I don’t know much about these fancy horse racin’ terms, but I know a winner when I see one.
That Horse, Deterministic, He Done Won It
The horse that won, they called him Deterministic. A funny name, if you ask me. But he was fast, that’s for sure. Folks said he run real good in some other race a while back, somethin’ called the Gotham Stakes. Didn’t do so well in them Triple Crown races though, they say. But he sure showed ’em in this Virginia Derby.
There was another horse, Grand Mo, they say he give Deterministic a run for his money. Come in second, I reckon. Close race, from what I hear. But Deterministic, he was just too strong in the end.

That Fella Franco, He Had Himself a Day
Now, there’s this jockey, fella named Franco. He was ridin’ Deterministic, and he done real good. But that ain’t all. Heard tell he won a whole bunch of races that day. Seven, they say! Seven races! That boy musta been tired, but he was probably smilin’ all the way to the bank.
Colonial Downs, That’s Where They Done It
They had this race at a place called Colonial Downs. It’s a racetrack, ya know, where them horses run around in a circle. Heard it’s a real nice place, though I ain’t never been there myself. They got all sorts of races there, not just this Virginia Derby. Seems like every day they got somethin’ goin’ on. You can bet on the horses, if you’re a mind to. Some folks win, some folks lose. That’s just how it goes.
Carson’s Run, Another Horse, He Won Too
Oh yeah, almost forgot. There was another race, not the Derby, but still a good one. A horse named Carson’s Run, he done won that one. Trainer was some fella named Christophe Clement. Don’t know them fellas, but they must be good at what they do, gettin’ them horses to run so fast.
End of the Summer, That’s What They Said
This Virginia Derby, it was the big race to end the summer racin’ season at Colonial Downs. So, I guess them horses and them jockeys, they can take a little break now. Until next time, anyway.
The Owners and Trainers, They Was There Too
Them folks that own them horses and the folks that train ‘em, they was all there too, watchin’ their horses run. Must be a nerve-wrackin’ thing, seein’ all that money ridin’ on a horse race. But that’s the life they chose, I reckon.
The Crowd, They Was Cheerin’
And the crowd, oh my, they was somethin’ else. Yellin’ and screamin’ and cheerin’ for their favorite horses. It’s excitin’, I bet, bein’ there in person. Makes ya feel alive, ya know? Even if you don’t know a thing about horse racin’, you can get caught up in the excitement.

So, that’s about all I know about that Virginia Derby race on September 7th. Deterministic won, Franco won a bunch, and everybody had a good time, I reckon. Now, I gotta get back to my chores. This talkin’ about horse racin’ makes a fella hungry. Maybe I’ll fry up some taters.
