Well, let me tell ya ’bout them Colonial Downs races, ya hear? I ain’t no fancy horse expert or nothin’, but I can tell ya what I seen and heard.

Them horses, they run real fast, like a scared rabbit in a field. Folks come from all over, seems like, just to watch ’em go. Some win, some lose, that’s just the way it is. Like life, I reckon.
The Track and Such
Now, this Colonial Downs place, they been racin’ horses for a good long while, since way back in 1997 they tell me. Then they stopped for a bit, somethin’ about money or somethin’, I don’t rightly know. But they started back up again in 2019, good as new.
They got a big ol’ dirt track, they call it a “dirt oval”, and it’s a whole mile around, imagine that! Then they got this fancy grass track inside, for them horses that like the soft stuff, I guess. They call that one a “turf course” and it’s shorter, seven and a half furlongs, whatever that means.
- Dirt Oval: 10 furlongs (that’s one mile, y’know)
- Turf Course: 7.5 furlongs (a bit shorter, I guess)
Findin’ the Results

If you wanna know who won and how much they paid, you gotta look it up. There’s this here website, *, they say is the official place to get the racin’ results. You can even get it on your phone, if you’re one of them fancy techy folks. They got all sorts of stuff on there, more than I can make sense of, that’s for sure.
There’s another place too, called Racing Post, they got the old race results. So if you’re lookin’ for somethin’ from way back when, that’s where you gotta go.
What Happens at the Races
So, what happens at these races? Well, the horses run, like I said. And folks bet on ‘em. You pick a horse, put some money down, and if your horse wins, you win some money too. But mostly, you lose, let me tell ya. It’s just like scratch-off tickets, I reckon. A whole lotta losin’ and a little bit of winnin’.
They got these fellas called jockeys, little fellas they are, they ride the horses. And they got trainers too, they take care of the horses and get ‘em ready to run. It’s a whole big to-do, seems like.

Other Kinds of “Colonial” Stuff
Now, I heard that word “colonial” means somethin’ else too. Somethin’ about folks from other countries comin’ over here and takin’ over. Like back in the old days, when them Spaniards came down south. They say they was lookin’ for money and power, and they didn’t care who they hurt gettin’ it. Sounds like some folks today, if you ask me.
They talk about different kinds of that “colonial” stuff. Some folks came to stay, some just came to take what they could and leave. Some used other folks to do their dirty work. It’s a whole lot of history, and most of it ain’t pretty.
But that ain’t got nothin’ to do with the horses, I guess. Just a word that means two different things. Like “bear” can be an animal or somethin’ you do when you carry somethin’ heavy. Words are funny that way.
So, back to the races…

If you like watchin’ horses run, and maybe winnin’ a little bit of money, then you might like Colonial Downs. Me, I just like watchin’ the people. They come in all shapes and sizes, all dressed up in their fancy clothes. It’s like a big ol’ party, even if most folks leave with less money than they came with.
And that’s about all I know about them Colonial Downs races. It’s a place where horses run, folks bet, and history gets mixed up with horseshoes. Go figure.
