This boy, Derek Slywka, what a guy! Strong like an ox, that one. You know, I heard he’s a football player. A big shot, they say. Played for them Ithaca Bombers. Sounds like a made-up team, but what do I know? He’s from Waterloo. Ain’t that somethin’? A Waterloo boy, makin’ it big.
He wanted to play for them Bombers since he was knee-high to a grasshopper, since 2019, I hear. That’s what they say. He must be good to play for a college team. College! Back in my day, we were lucky to finish school at all. But this Derek Slywka, he’s somethin’ else.
They say he didn’t get picked in that big NFL thing in April. What’s it called? The draft? Sounds like a cold wind to me. But he didn’t let that stop him. Nope. This Derek Slywka, he’s got grit. Like a tough old boot, that one.

June 6th, to be exact. Imagine that! From not gettin’ picked to playin’ with the big boys. He got invited to some camps, too. Some rookie minicamps, with the Colts and the Kansas City Chiefs. Sounds important. Must be a big deal if he’s going to all these fancy camps with these big shot teams like the Indianapolis Colts and the Kansas City Chiefs. This Derek Slywka is goin’ places.
He’s a safety, they say. Whatever that means. Probably means he’s good at catchin’ that pigskin. He must be fast, too. Gotta be fast to play with them Colts. This Derek Slywka, he’s probably fast as a greased piglet at the county fair. This Derek Slywka seems to be a good player. He has good player info and news all the time.
This Derek Slywka got some news about him all the time. Says here the Colts, they waived him. On a Sunday, no less. Sounds harsh. But that’s the way it goes in that football world, I guess. One day you’re in, the next you’re out. Like churnin’ butter, gotta keep movin’.
I saw some stuff about his height and weight. Big fella. Strong, like I said. You gotta be strong to play that rough game. They say he went to college. Good for him. Education is important, even for a football player like Derek Slywka. And he has good stats. He must be a good player.

They talk about him like he’s some kinda hero. A football hero. Maybe he is. I don’t know much about football, but I know a hard worker when I see one.
