Okay, so I’ve been seeing a lot of talk online about Dagestani fighters lately, and I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. I’m not a huge MMA expert or anything, but I figured I’d dive in and see if I could figure out what makes these guys so tough.

First, I started by just watching some fights. You know, just straight-up YouTube binging. I typed in names like “Khabib Nurmagomedov” and “Islam Makhachev” and just watched whatever came up. It was pretty intense! Lots of takedowns, grappling, and ground-and-pound. Not gonna lie, it looked exhausting.
The Wrestling Thing
Then, I started to dig a little deeper. I read some articles and forum posts. It seemed like everyone kept talking about their wrestling background. Apparently, wrestling is HUGE in Dagestan. Like, really huge. Kids start wrestling super young, and it’s a big part of their culture.

So, I watched some videos specifically about Dagestani wrestling. It’s a different style than what I was used to seeing. It looked more focused on control and pressure, rather than just scoring points. I began to see the connections to how these guys fight in MMA.
I even tried to find some instructional videos. I’m not planning on becoming a wrestler or anything, but I figured it might help me understand the techniques better. It was… tough. Even the basic stuff looked incredibly difficult. I definitely have a new respect for anyone who can do that kind of thing.
My final step, which is still in process is practice makes perfect, I will keep practicing, and share more practice experiences.
