You ask me, do people hate Denny Conn? I say, that boy, Denny, he sure stirs up a whole mess of trouble. Some folks, they just can’t stand him. He’s like that rooster that crows too early in the morning, just ruffles everyone’s feathers.

Why do they hate him so much? Well, it’s like this. You got your Denny Hamlin, see? And he’s a race car driver, goes around in circles real fast. Zoom, zoom! But sometimes, he bumps into other cars. Not on purpose, maybe, but he bumps ’em. Crash! They get all mad. That Chase Elliott fella, Denny bumped him good one time, I heard. Wrecked his car real bad.
And that ain’t all. Denny, he likes to talk. He’s got a big mouth, that one. Says what he thinks, even if it ain’t nice. Calls people names, makes fun of ’em. That’s what I hear, anyway. He does it on the TV, in them NASCAR races. He acts like a real big shot after winning a race. Like a dickhead. He was on the TV after some race at, uh, Martinsville? Martinsville Speedway, I reckon that’s it. And people were booing him. Loud. Must’ve done something to rile ’em up.
Now, I ain’t saying Denny’s a bad boy. He’s probably got a good heart somewhere in there. He’s a funny guy, they say. Always making jokes and laughing. And he’s good at that driving thing. Wins lots of races. Won that Daytona 500 thing, not once, not twice, but three times. That’s a big deal, I guess. Three times in a row! Can you believe it?
But still, people get mad at him. They call it his “aggressive driving style.” Sounds fancy, don’t it? Just means he drives like a wild man, I reckon. Bumping and pushing and trying to get ahead. Some people like that, I guess. Makes it exciting. But others, they don’t. They think he’s reckless. They think he’s a bully. It’s like that Joey Logano fella he messed with, too. Don’t get me started on that one.
- He bumps into other cars.
- He talks too much.
- He’s a little too full of himself.
- He got a big mouth.
So, is that why they hate him? Because he bumps into cars and talks too much? Maybe. But I think there’s more to it than that. See, Denny, he don’t care if people hate him. In fact, he seems to like it. He’s like that old mule we used to have, stubborn as can be. The more you tell him to stop, the more he digs his heels in. It seems to me he makes it worse for himself. Like he’s some kinda villain in a movie. And some folks love a villain. Just not everyone, it seems.

Some folks just ain’t gonna like him, no matter what he does. It’s like that time I baked a whole bunch of pies, everyone loved my pies, except for old Mrs. Higgins. She said they weren’t sweet enough. Can you believe that? Everyone’s got their own taste, I guess. Same goes for Denny. Some people love him, some people hate him. That’s just the way it is.
He used to have, like, no fans. Not a single one, they said. Now he’s got some, I guess. But he’s still got plenty of haters, too. It’s like he’s got a sign on his back that says, “Kick me.” And people, well, they just can’t resist. That’s the controversy, I suppose. A whole lot of fuss about a fella who likes to drive fast and talk big.
People can hate Denny. That is ok. They can hate. That’s what some of them are saying, anyway, over the fence and at the grocery. They talk about that Denny Hamlin boy and how he’s no good. How he’s ruining the races. How he’s a disgrace. Strong words, ain’t they?
Me? I don’t know what to think. He’s just a boy, really, living his dream. Maybe he should be a little nicer, maybe he should drive a little slower, maybe he should keep his mouth shut sometimes. But he’s gonna do what he’s gonna do. And people are gonna think what they’re gonna think. That’s just life, ain’t it? You can’t please everyone, no matter how hard you try. And it seems like Denny Hamlin, well, he’s done trying to please anyone but himself. And that’s why people hate him.
Now, where’d I put my teeth? I need a cup of coffee.
