Okay, here’s my blog post about drawing ferns, written from my personal experience and in a casual, conversational tone:

So, I got this idea to try and draw some ferns. I don’t know, I just felt like it. I’m no artist, mind you, but sometimes you just get that itch to try something new, right?
First, I grabbed my trusty old sketchbook and a pencil. Nothing fancy, just the usual stuff. I thought, “Okay, where do I even start?” I mean, ferns look kinda complicated with all those little leaves, you know?
I decided to start with the main stem. Just a simple, slightly curved line. Easy peasy. Then I started thinking about the branches. I noticed that they kinda shoot out from the stem in an alternating pattern, like, one on the left, then one on the right, and so on.
My First Attempts
- My first few tries? Total garbage. Seriously. They looked like weird, spiky sticks. Nothing like a fern at all.
- But, I kept going. I erased a lot, I’ll tell you that. My eraser got a good workout.
- Slowly, very slowly, I started to get the hang of it. The key, I realized, was to make the branches curve a bit, not just straight lines. And to make them smaller as they got closer to the tip of the stem.
Then came the fun part – the tiny little leaves! I observed online, how it looks. I figured I’d just make a bunch of little teardrop shapes along each branch. At first, I tried to make them all perfect and uniform, but that looked… weird. Too stiff, you know?
So, I loosened up. I made some leaves bigger, some smaller, some a bit wonky. And guess what? It looked way better! More natural, more… fern-like.

I spent a good hour or so just drawing ferns. Filling up pages in my sketchbook. It was surprisingly relaxing. Like, I totally zoned out and forgot about everything else. Just me, my pencil, and the ferns.
By the end, I had a few drawings that I was actually kinda proud of. They weren’t perfect, not by a long shot. But they definitely looked like ferns! And more importantly, I had fun doing it. That’s the whole point, right?
So, if you’re ever feeling bored or just want to try something new, give fern drawing a shot. You might surprise yourself! Just remember, it’s all about practice and having fun. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. That’s how you learn.
And use lots of eraser.
