Alright, so I wanted to share a bit about something I figured out on Snapchat a while back, something that had me a tad confused at first. It’s that little hourglass emoji ⌛ that sometimes pops up next to a friend’s name. You’ve probably seen it, right?

My First Encounter
I remember the first time I spotted it. I was just scrolling through my chats, business as usual, and there it was. I didn’t think much of it initially. Figured it was some new update I’d missed, or maybe my friend had set a weird status. But then, it was still there later, and I started to get a bit curious. What was Snapchat trying to tell me?
Figuring It Out
So, I did what most of us do – I started paying closer attention. I noticed it appeared next to a friend with whom I had a pretty long Snapstreak. That got me thinking. Could it be related to our streak? I sent a Snap to that friend, just a quick picture, nothing fancy. And guess what? A little while later, I checked again, and the hourglass was gone!
That was my lightbulb moment. It’s all about the Snapstreaks!
What the Hourglass Actually Means
So, after a bit more observation and a few close calls with losing streaks (yes, it happened!), I got the full picture. Here’s the deal based on what I’ve seen:
- Your Snapstreak is in danger: That hourglass is basically a warning sign. It means your Snapstreak with that friend is about to expire. Like, very soon!
- Time is ticking: You and your friend haven’t sent each other a Snap (and it has to be a Snap, like a photo or video, not just a chat message) within the last 24 hours.
- Act fast: When you see it, you need to send a Snap to that person, and they need to send one back to you, pretty quickly to keep the streak alive.
How Much Time Do You Really Have?
Now, this is the tricky bit. I’ve noticed the hourglass doesn’t mean you have seconds left. It usually means you have a few hours. I’ve heard some folks say it can even be up to around 4 hours before the streak actually disappears, giving you that window to save it. But honestly, I wouldn’t risk it. Once I see that hourglass, I try to send a Snap as soon as I can. I’ve learned the hard way that pushing it can lead to a lost streak, and nobody wants that, especially if it’s a long one!

The key is that both of you need to send a Snap to each other. Just one person sending a Snap isn’t enough if the 24-hour window for the other person has also nearly closed.
So, In a Nutshell
Basically, that little hourglass ⌛ is Snapchat’s way of giving you a nudge. It’s a reminder saying, “Hey, you’re about to lose this streak you’ve worked so hard for!” So, if you care about your Snapstreaks, keep an eye out for it and act quickly. Don’t let that sand run out!
Just thought I’d share my experience with it. Hope it helps someone out there save a streak or two!
