My Day Out at Caledonia Golf and Fish Club
Alright, so I’d been hearing stuff about this place, Caledonia Golf and Fish Club. People said it was pretty special, not just your average golf course. I’m always up for trying a new track, especially one with a bit of a reputation, so I decided, “Yeah, let’s do this.” I got myself a tee time and figured I’d see what all the fuss was about.
Getting there was an experience in itself. You turn off the main highway, and suddenly you’re driving under this incredible canopy of ancient oak trees, Spanish moss hanging down everywhere. It really felt like I was rolling into somewhere unique. The clubhouse isn’t some huge, modern glass building either. It’s got this classic, old Southern plantation vibe. Super cool, and honestly, really welcoming. My first thought was, “Okay, this is looking promising.”
Tackling the Course
So, I got sorted with my cart and made my way to the first tee. Man, that first look at the course just hits you. The way it’s laid out, with all the flowers, the water, it’s just beautiful. They say it’s a Mike Strantz design, and you can totally see it. It’s not about just whacking the ball down a wide fairway. Every single hole makes you stop and think. Or, in my case, often leads to some head-scratching.
I’m not gonna pretend I played my best round ever. Nope. I definitely donated a few golf balls to the water gods out there. Some of those hazards just seem to suck my ball right in. But even when I was digging my ball out of somewhere I shouldn’t have been, the views were just fantastic. There were these par-3s that played over water, stunning to look at but a real test. I distinctly remember one hole, I think it was the 11th, where you’re hitting to this green that feels like it’s floating. Definitely got the heart rate up.
And the greens, oh boy, the greens were something else. They weren’t flat, that’s for sure. Full of little slopes and tricky breaks. You really had to work for your putts. But it was that good kind of challenge, you know? The kind that makes you want to come back and try again. I didn’t set any course records, but I absolutely loved the challenge and the walk.
More Than Just the Golf Game
And they don’t call it a “Fish Club” for kicks. You actually see people out there, fishing along the waterways. I didn’t get a chance to try that myself – was a bit too busy trying to keep my golf score from exploding. But it really adds to the whole atmosphere of the place. It feels like it’s about more than just golf; it’s about enjoying that whole Lowcountry environment.
Everyone I met working there was super friendly. No stuffiness, just genuinely nice people. After my round, I grabbed a drink and sat out on the clubhouse porch. It overlooks the 18th green, which is a heck of a finishing hole. You’ve got to carry your approach shot over water, right in front of everyone on that porch. Talk about a pressure cooker! It was fun watching other groups come in.

- Spotted a couple of alligators lounging by the water. Definitely kept my ball (and myself) away from them!

Final Thoughts on Caledonia
So, if you’re wondering if Caledonia was worth the trip, my answer is a big “yes!” It’s not the cheapest round of golf you’ll find, but for the sheer beauty, the challenge, and the whole experience, I’d say it’s a must-play if you’re a golfer and you’re in the area. It’s the kind of course that really sticks in your memory. You’ll be replaying shots in your head for days.
I’m already thinking about when I can get back down there. Maybe next time I’ll give the fishing a shot too. Or at least try and keep a few more of my golf balls on dry land. It was, without a doubt, a fantastic day out. If you get the chance, you should definitely check Caledonia out. I really don’t think you’ll regret it.
