So, I finally made it out to the Indianapolis Nationals drag racing this year. Been meaning to go for ages, just never got around to it.

Getting There and Settling In
Woke up early, grabbed some coffee, and hit the road. Figured I’d beat the worst of the traffic, which sort of worked. Getting into the actual parking lot, though, that took some time. Found a spot eventually, grabbed my chair and cooler.
Getting through the gates was pretty smooth. First thing you notice isn’t the cars, it’s the sound. Even from far away, you can kinda feel it. Found a spot over by the stands, not too bad, could see the starting line okay.
The Main Event
Okay, the racing itself. It’s loud. Like, really loud. You feel the ground shake when those top fuel cars take off. It’s nuts. Way different than watching it on TV. You get the smell too – race fuel, burning rubber. It just hangs in the air.
- Saw some crazy fast runs.
- Watched the crews working like mad between rounds.
- The Pro Stock cars are cool, look more like street cars.
It’s funny, you sit there for hours. Lots of waiting, then bam! A few seconds of insane noise and speed, then more waiting. But people are really into it. Lots of families, lots of guys who clearly know their stuff.
Some Thoughts and Stuff
Reminded me of going to local dirt tracks when I was younger. Same kind of energy, just way bigger and way, way faster. You pay a lot for food and drinks inside, no surprise there. Packed my own water and some snacks, glad I did.

One thing that got me was just how intense everything is. Not just the cars, but the whole operation. Teams tearing down engines, fans packed in, the announcers yelling. It’s a whole world out there.
Met a guy next to me, been coming for twenty years. Told me some stories about old races. That was pretty cool, just chatting with people who love the same thing.
Wrapping Up the Day
Stayed pretty much till the end. Sun was beating down most of the day, definitely got some sun. Packed up my stuff, headed back to the car. Ears were ringing a bit, probably should’ve worn earplugs like some folks did.
The drive home was slow, everyone leaving at once. Standard stuff. Was tired when I got back, but it was worth it. Seeing those machines up close, feeling that power… yeah, it was a good day out. Probably do it again sometime.
