Well, let me tell ya, hitting that little white ball straight, that’s the trick, ain’t it? My old man, bless his soul, he used to whack at it all day long. Sometimes it’d go straight as an arrow, other times… well, let’s just say the squirrels got a good laugh. This here is about straighter drives, that’s what they call it, I reckon. Getting that ball to go where you want it to go.

First thing’s first, you gotta stand right. I seen folks stand all wobbly and crooked, and then they wonder why the ball goes sideways! You gotta plant your feet firm, like you’re plantin’ corn. Not too close, not too far. Just right. I seen folks all hunched up, like they are about to pick up a big rock and throw it, or they do some weird things with their feet and they make it a mess. Make your feet right, that’s what I say.
Now, you gotta hold that club right, too. Not too tight, you’ll choke the life outta it. Not too loose, it’ll fly outta your hands. Just like holdin’ a baby chick, firm but gentle. You gotta find that sweet spot. It is important for your straighter drives goal.
- Stand up straight, not like a scarecrow.
- Feet shoulder-width, like you are gonna milk a cow.
- Hold the club right, not too tight, not too loose.
Then there’s the swing. Oh, the swing! I seen folks swing like they’re choppin’ wood, all jerky and wild. That ain’t gonna get you nowhere. You gotta be smooth, like butter churnin’. Back and forth, nice and easy. A good swing is a key for a straighter drive.
Some folks, they try to hit that ball so hard, they practically fall over! Slow down, I tell ’em. It ain’t about how hard you hit it, it’s about how you hit it. You gotta be smart, not strong. Just like gettin’ a stubborn mule to move, you gotta be patient and clever.
Now, I heard some folks talk about somethin’ called “pivot.” Sounds fancy, don’t it? But it’s just turnin’ your body, like when you’re watchin’ a hawk circle in the sky. You don’t just move your head, your whole body kinda turns with it. Same with hittin’ that ball, you gotta turn your body, not just your arms.

And don’t be swayin’ back and forth like a willow tree in the wind. Keep your feet planted. It is very important. You can sway when the ball lands, that’s what I do. Just make sure you do not sway when you try to make straighter drives.
Another thing. Don’t be liftin’ your head up too soon, tryin’ to see where the ball’s goin’. Keep your eye on that ball, like a hawk watchin’ a mouse. You gotta see it to hit it, right?
Now, I ain’t no expert, mind you. But I seen a lot of folks hit a lot of balls in my time. And I learned a thing or two. It takes practice, that’s for sure. You ain’t gonna be hittin’ it straight every time, right off the bat. But don’t you give up! Keep at it, and you’ll get there.
Some folks say you gotta do these fancy exercises, these “drills” they call ’em. Like standin’ with your feet together. Sounds silly, but they say it helps you learn to turn your body without swayin’. These “drills” might help you with your straighter drive.
- Stand with your feet close together, like you’re standin’ on a narrow log.
- Swing the club, but don’t let your body sway. Just turn.
- Hit the ball. See if it goes straighter.
They got all sorts of these drills. Some of ’em might work, some of ’em might not. You gotta find what works for you. Just like findin’ the right bait for fishin’, you gotta experiment a little. Just remember to keep your swing smooth.

And don’t be afraid to ask for help. There’s always someone who knows a little more than you do. Just like when you need help with your garden, you ask your neighbor. Don’t be shy. We all gotta learn somehow.
So there you have it. My two cents on hittin’ that little white ball straight. It ain’t rocket science, as they say. Just good old common sense. And a whole lot of practice. Now go on out there and give it a try. And remember, have fun! It ain’t worth doin’ if you ain’t enjoyin’ it. Straighter drives to you!
