Alright, so, Charles Barkley and golf, huh? Yeah, I went down that rabbit hole. Let me tell you how it went.

It all started with me seeing some clip online. Barkley hacking away at a golf ball, looking like he was trying to kill it rather than play golf. It was…memorable. I thought, “Man, I gotta see if I can figure out what’s going on with his swing.”
First thing I did was jump on YouTube. Started searching for “Charles Barkley golf swing.” Boom! Tons of videos. Old ones, new ones, analyses, parodies – the whole shebang.
I watched a bunch of them. I mean, a bunch. Some were just highlight reels of his worst shots. Others were trying to break down what he was doing wrong. It was a mixed bag, for sure.
After a while, I started noticing some patterns. Like, his swing was really jerky. He’d pause at the top, then just kinda…slam the club down. No smooth transition, no rhythm. Just pure, unadulterated chaos.
Then I saw a video that talked about his “hitch.” Apparently, he developed this weird hitch in his swing years ago, and it’s been plaguing him ever since. They said he tried everything to fix it – different coaches, different techniques, you name it.
So, I got to thinking, “Okay, what if I tried to mimic that hitch? What would that feel like?” I know, sounds crazy, right?
I grabbed my old golf club (it’s been gathering dust in the garage), went out to the backyard, and started trying to copy Barkley’s swing. I paused at the top, I jerked the club, I swung like I was trying to chop down a tree. It was…awkward, to say the least.
I recorded myself doing it. Ugh. It was even worse than I thought. My swing looked nothing like his (which, honestly, is probably a good thing), but I could feel what they were talking about. The lack of fluidity, the struggle to control the club – it was all there.
I kept messing around with it for a while, trying to exaggerate the hitch, then trying to smooth it out. I didn’t magically fix my own swing, of course, but it did give me a new appreciation for how difficult golf can be, especially when you’re fighting a bad habit.
Eventually, I gave up. My back was starting to hurt, and I was pretty sure the neighbors were laughing at me. But hey, at least I can say I tried to understand the enigma that is Charles Barkley’s golf swing.

The whole thing was just a fun little experiment. I learned a bit about golf swings, I got a good laugh at myself, and I now have a newfound respect for anyone who can actually hit a golf ball straight. Maybe I’ll even take a real lesson sometime… Nah, probably not.
