Alright, buckle up, folks! Let me walk you through this whole “Helluva Boss Oliver” thing I’ve been messing around with. It was a bit of a journey, lemme tell ya.
So, it all started with me just being a huge fan of Helluva Boss, right? And I stumbled across some fan art of an “Oliver” character design. I thought, “Damn, that’s cool! I wanna see if I can make something like that myself.”
First off, I spent a good chunk of time just collecting references. I scoured the internet for images of the Helluva Boss style, especially focusing on character designs. I really wanted to nail that sharp, angular look and the specific color palettes they use.
Then, I fired up my drawing tablet and started sketching. I started with some super rough thumbnails, just trying to get the overall pose and silhouette right. I was mainly using a drawing software that allowed for custom brushes, as getting the line art similar to the show was a priority.
Next, I started refining the sketch, working on the details of Oliver’s design. I wanted him to have a kind of mischievous but classy look. I wanted to make him look cunning and intelligent.
Once I was happy with the sketch, it was time to move onto the line art. This part was a bit tedious, ngl. I really took my time to get those clean, crisp lines that are so characteristic of the show’s style. I also varied the line weight to add some depth and visual interest.

After the line art, came the coloring process. I created a color palette based on the Helluva Boss aesthetic. I mostly focused on the greens, blacks, and pale skin colors. I laid down the base colors first, then added some simple shading to give the character some dimension. I used cell shading, staying away from gradients and soft brushes.
Finally, I added some highlights and details. A bit of shine on the eyes, some subtle details on the clothing, that kind of thing. I played around with different blending modes to create some interesting effects.
Honestly, the whole thing took me a couple of days to finish, working on it in my free time. There were definitely moments where I felt like giving up, but I’m glad I stuck with it.
And that was it. I feel pretty good about how it turned out. It’s not perfect, but I learned a lot in the process. Plus, it was just a fun way to express my love for the show!
