Man, today was a wild ride. I decided to get up close and personal with some horses, and let me tell you, it was an experience. I started by reading up on these majestic creatures. Turns out, they’re pretty darn fast. I mean, we’re talking 25-30 miles per hour on average. That’s like a car in a school zone! Some of those racing breeds? Forget about it, they’re hitting over 40 mph!

So, I went to see these speed demons in action. First, I watched them just casually walking around. Even then, you could see the power in their legs. They were moving at a leisurely pace, what I learned was called a “walk.” Then, they picked up the pace a bit, breaking into a “trot.” It was like watching a well-choreographed dance, all rhythmic and smooth.
My Observation
But the real show started when they began to “gallop.” Holy smokes, that was a sight to behold! They were practically flying across the field. Dust was kicking up, hooves were pounding, and I could feel the ground vibrating beneath my feet. I tried to clock them with my phone’s stopwatch, but they were just too fast. I’m pretty sure they were hitting those top speeds, easy.
Now, I’m no jockey, but I did manage to get on one of these beasts. They had me on a gentle giant, thankfully. Even at a slow walk, it was a bit nerve-wracking. But once I got the hang of it, it was exhilarating. We even managed a little trot, and I felt like I was in one of those old Western movies. I didn’t push it to a gallop, though. I’ll leave that to the professionals.
Different Factors
During the day, I chatted with one of the trainers. She was a real horse whisperer, let me tell you. She explained how different things can affect a horse’s speed like stride length, conditioning, cardiovascular, surface, rider, breathing. She told me it’s not just about how fast they can go, but also about their stamina and how long they can maintain that speed. Apparently, carrying a rider can slow them down quite a bit, especially over longer distances. She mentioned something about a Thoroughbred’s speed dropping from 40 mph to 20 mph with a rider over a mile. Who knew?

Here’s what I took away from my day with the horses:
- They’re incredibly fast, even the average ones.
- There’s a big difference between a walk, a trot, and a gallop.
- Riding a horse is harder than it looks, but super fun.
- A lot goes into how fast a horse can run, not just their breed.

All in all, it was an awesome day. I learned a ton, got some great pictures, and even got to ride a horse. If you ever get the chance, I highly recommend spending some time with these amazing animals. Just maybe leave the racing to the pros!
