My Notes on Darnell Furlong
So, I’ve been keeping tabs on Darnell Furlong for a while now. It wasn’t like some big project, just something I started doing, keeping little notes here and there when watching games.

I first jotted his name down, I think, back when he was trying to break through at QPR. You see these young lads, full of energy, and you just make a mental note, sometimes a physical one in my old notebook. He had that raw pace back then, bombing up and down the right side. Didn’t always have the final product, but the engine was clearly there. That’s what I wrote down: “Lots of running, potential maybe?” Simple stuff.
Then came the move to West Brom. I thought, okay, interesting step. Let’s see how he does with more regular games at a club often pushing for promotion or battling in the Prem. My routine was usually watching the highlights, maybe a full game if I had time on a Saturday afternoon, and I’d look out for him specifically.
- Physicality: First thing that struck me more at West Brom was his strength. He seemed to fill out, got tougher in the tackle. Made a note: “Holds his own physically now.”
- Crossing: His delivery from wide areas got better, more consistent. I remember noting down a few assists he got just from whipping decent balls in. Became a key part of his game, I reckon.
- Long Throws: And yeah, the long throws. Can’t forget those. Always cause a bit of chaos. Put that in my notes too – “Weapon: long throw.” Always good to have something different like that.
Keeping Track Over Time
It’s not like I was doing complex stats. Mostly just observations. Watching him, you see the effort is always there. He works incredibly hard, up and down that flank. Sometimes his final decision lets him down, maybe gets caught out defensively once in a while, but the commitment, you can’t really fault it. I scribbled things like “Good engine today” or “Bit rash in that challenge” after watching certain matches.
Consistency is the big thing I look for when I follow a player like this, just for my own interest. Has he been consistent? Mostly, yeah. Had spells where he looked top-class for the Championship, other times maybe a bit less influential. But generally, you know what you’re getting: hard work, physical presence, a threat from crosses and throws.
So yeah, that’s my little record-keeping on Darnell Furlong. Nothing fancy, just watching football and making a few notes as I go. It’s interesting to look back sometimes and see how a player develops, or confirms your early thoughts. He’s carved out a solid career for himself, which is good to see for a lad you first noticed years ago just running his socks off.
