Well, I heard some folks talkin’ ’bout that Daytona 500 thing, that big car race. They say it happened in 2023. Now, I ain’t one for them fancy cars, but I heard it’s a real big deal. I reckon it was sometime in February, that’s what they said, February 19, 2023, to be exact. That’s the date for the Daytona 500 in 2023. This race, it’s the 65th time they done it. Can you believe that? Sixty-five years of them cars goin’ round and round.
I heard it’s 500 miles long! Can you imagine? That’s a long way to be drivin’ in a circle. Must take a whole lot of gas. It is the start of the NASCAR season. I don’t know much about this NASCAR, but it sounds important, real important. They say it’s the big one, the one everyone wants to win. I guess it’s like our county fair’s pie contest, but with cars instead of pies.
This Daytona 500, it’s always held down in Florida, a place called Daytona Beach. Sounds like a nice place, probably warm. They got a big track there, they call it the Daytona International Speedway. It’s a big oval, 2.5 miles long, I heard. And those cars, they go zoomin’ around it real fast. Faster than old Bessie the cow when she sees a snake!
I heard them say somethin’ about TV. If you ain’t there in person, you can watch it on the TV. I think they said FOX? Maybe that’s the channel. And there was some talk about an app. I don’t know nothin’ about no apps. I still got my old radio, and that works just fine for me.

This race, the Daytona 500 in 2023, they said it was supposed to be on Sunday. But then, wouldn’t you know it, the good Lord sent some rain. Yep, rained cats and dogs, as they say. So, they had to move it to Monday. Imagine that, startin’ the week with a big race. It’s the first time they ever had to do that, move it to Monday because of the weather. They had some other race, too, called Xfinity or somethin’ like that. They had to do that on Monday, too. A whole lot of racin’ on a Monday, ain’t that somethin’?
Now, there’s this fella, Hamlin, I think that’s his name. They say he’s a good racer. Real good. He was one of the favorites to win this Daytona 500, along with some other fella named Ryan. And then there’s another one, Kyle Busch. Lots of fellas with cars, all wantin’ to be the first to cross that finish line.
They say the winner gets a lot of money. A whole heap of it. I heard someone say somethin’ about a million dollars, maybe even two! Can you imagine that? That’s more money than I’ve seen in my whole life! I guess it takes a lot to keep them cars runnin’.
This here Daytona 500, it’s more than just a race, I reckon. It’s a whole week of doin’s. They got all sorts of things goin’ on down there in Daytona. Practice runs, qualifyin’ rounds, all sorts of stuff. It’s like a big party, but with cars. Sounds like a whole lot of noise to me. They call this whole week thing “Speedweeks”. Now that is a fitting name.
I heard them talkin’ ’bout how NASCAR is 75 years old in 2023. That’s older than me! They been doin’ this car racin’ thing for a long time. I reckon they know what they’re doin’ by now. They say that Daytona 500 date 2023 was a big one, bein’ the 65th time they ran it.
They got other races, too, not just the Daytona 500. There is another one, somethin’ about Coca-Cola. The Coca-Cola 600. That’s another long one, 600 miles, I hear. That’s even longer than the Daytona 500! That one’s held somewhere called Charlotte, in North Carolina. Seems like these car folks sure do like to travel around.
Well, that’s all I know about that Daytona 500 date 2023 thing. It’s a big race, that’s for sure. Lots of fast cars, lots of people, and lots of money. It ain’t my cup of tea, but I reckon it’s somethin’ to see. I guess I will stick to watching the pigs race at the county fair. That is exciting enough for me!
