Alright, let me tell you about my little adventure with “jerry walker.” I’m no pro, just a regular guy tinkering around, so bear with me!
So, it all started last week. I stumbled upon this “jerry walker” thing – looked interesting, kinda like a tool for, well, walking through something. I wasn’t exactly sure what, but I figured, hey, why not?
First, I downloaded the necessary files. Man, finding the right version was a pain. There were like five different “jerry walker” projects on the internet. I eventually settled on one that seemed to have decent documentation. The instructions were a bit unclear, to be honest. Lots of jargon, not enough examples.
Next, I tried to set it up. Oh boy. The dependencies were a nightmare. I had to install, like, ten different libraries, and half of them were conflicting with each other. Spent a solid afternoon just wrestling with that. I almost gave up! But I’m stubborn, so I kept at it. I finally got all the dependencies installed after a lot of googling and trying different versions of each library.
Then, I configured the thing. This involved editing some config files, which were, of course, in some obscure format I’d never seen before. I had to read the (sparse) documentation very carefully, and even then I wasn’t entirely sure what I was doing. I just changed the values until it stopped throwing errors!
After all that, I finally ran it. And… nothing. Just a blank screen. Awesome. More debugging. Turns out, I had to create some kind of “walking path” file. The documentation described this vaguely as a “series of points.” Okay, great. I had no idea how to create these points. I ended up just making them up, using random coordinates. It felt really janky, but what else could I do?
Finally, with my random points in place, I ran it again. And… it worked! Sort of. It was walking! It just wasn’t walking where I wanted it to walk. My random points clearly weren’t cutting it.
So, I figured I need to feed correct data for it to walk something useful. I did research and found a real-world data set containing GPS coordinates, and I adapted my “walking path” file to point to these GPS coordinates. Then I tried running it. Then, it worked! It walked through the path that I expected.

- Ran it and saw it walking through it!
It’s not perfect. It’s still a bit clunky, and I’m sure there are ways to optimize it. But hey, it works! And I learned a bunch along the way. Sometimes, just messing around and trying things is the best way to learn, even if it’s frustrating as heck at times.
