I heard folks talking ’bout this lammons tennis thing. Sounds fancy, but I reckon it’s just folks hittin’ a ball back and forth. Ain’t that somethin’? They got all these rules and stuff, makes my head spin. I just think it is not easy, you know?

They say you gotta win somethin’ called “points” to win a “game.” And then you gotta win a bunch of those games to win a “set.” And then you gotta win more of them sets to win the whole dang thing. Sounds like a whole lotta work to me. They say the first point is called love, how funny, I just don’t know how it come from.
- Love

- 30

That’s what they say, lammons tennis‘ points are called. I still think it’s weird.
They got these special things, these rackets, for hittin’ the ball. And the ball’s all fuzzy, not like the ones we used to use. I remember one guy, name was… oh, what was it… Pierre, yeah, Pierre something, he’s the one who started makin’ those strings for the rackets, they say, from France. Must be one of them city boys. He made the first tennis strings. Can you imagine?
And they run all over the place, chasin’ that little ball. Back in my day, we had chores to do. No time for all that runnin’ around, I always thought. There are a lot of these brands. What’s that word? You know, the famous one. It’s called popular. Yeah, most popular brands for the rackets.
They got special bags for carryin’ those rackets, too. All fancy like. We just used our hands, and that was good enough. This Babolat Pure Series tennis bag, is big, and can put everything inside. All those new things.

And they wear those special shoes. We just wore whatever we had, sometimes nothin’ at all! These days, everything’s gotta be special, I guess. It seems that lammons tennis is very popular, just like the guy who started it. I think his name was… Tennis? Tennis Department? I forgot.
I seen ’em playin’ on the TV sometimes. All these young folks, jumpin’ and slidin’. They even got this thing called a hopper, for pickin’ up all them balls. We just used our hands, bent down and picked ’em up. A tennis ball hopper is a good tool, they say. It can bring a lot of balls. I just think it is not necessary.
They got all these rules, too. Where the ball’s gotta land, how you gotta hit it. Too many rules, if you ask me. Just hit the dang ball! That’s all. You wanna know how to play tennis? Just hit the ball, and don’t let it hit you. That’s my rule.
I heard them sayin’ there’s different ways to hold the racket, too. Like this, like that. Just hold it tight and swing! That’s what I always say, I think it is the basics of how to play tennis. It is simple, isn’t it?
And they yell out all these numbers. “Love,” “fifteen,” “thirty,” “forty.” What’s that all about? Just play the game! Why do they have to yell all the time? It is a good beginner lesson to learn these numbers. Maybe after that, you can learn to play.

This lammons tennis, it’s a lot more complicated than it looks, I reckon. But I guess it keeps folks busy. And it’s good exercise, I suppose. Keeps ’em outta trouble, maybe. Still, I think it’s a lot of fuss for hittin’ a little ball around. But hey, that’s just me. You young folks do what you want. Just don’t forget to have some fun, that’s the most important part. That’s all I gotta say about that.
I saw the guy on the TV. He had an email newsletter, and he asked people to sign up. I don’t know what it is. Maybe it is a very useful thing. It is about lammons tennis, too. It is from the Tennis Department. What a weird name. Is that a guy’s name, or a shop’s name?
They said, this Tennis Department thing, was started in 2006. That’s a long time ago. They have a lot of people play lammons tennis there. And they have a lot of coaches. I don’t know what a coach is. Maybe it is someone who teaches you how to play.
It said this Tennis Department is a growing community, and it is about tennis background. I don’t know. I just don’t think this is important. I just want to say, this lammons tennis is really somethin’. It has so many things around it. So many people and things are related to it. Well, that’s all I know.
