Well, ain’t it a sad thing to hear, that Mike Hiss fella, you know, the one who raced them cars, he up and passed away. Yep, 77 years young, or should I say old? Heard it on the tellie, they was talkin’ about him bein’ the “Rookie of the Year” way back in ’72. Indianapolis 500, they called it. Sounded like a big deal.

Never been much for them racin’ things myself. Too fast, too noisy. Give me a good old horse and buggy any day. But Mike, he seemed like a good sort, from what they said. Drove them cars real good, apparently. 28 starts they said, in somethin’ called the USAC Championship Car Series. Don’t rightly know what that means, but it sounds important. Championship and all.
Died in Evansville, they said. That’s down south a ways, ain’t it? Poor fella. December 19th. Close to Christmas. Imagine that, family gettin’ ready for the holidays, and then this. Always seems to happen like that, doesn’t it? Bad news comin’ at the worst times.
- He raced cars.
- He was good at it.
- He died.
That’s about the gist of it, ain’t it? Life’s short, I always say. Here one minute, gone the next. Mike, he lived his life fast, I reckon, zoomin’ around that track. Probably saw a lot of things, met a lot of folks. Hope he enjoyed it.
They made a big announcement, they said. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway, that’s where he raced, I think. They told everyone he passed. Suppose they gotta do that, let folks know. Probably a lot of folks who knew him, liked him.
77 years is a good long life, some might say. But it always feels too short when someone’s gone, don’t it? Especially when it’s sudden. Guess we never know when our time’s gonna come. Could be tomorrow, could be years from now. Just gotta make the most of it, I guess. Like Mike, doin’ what he loved, racin’ them cars.

Heard they gave him an award, “Rookie of the Year.” Guess that means he was the best new fella drivin’ them cars that year. Must’ve been proud, him and his family. Somethin’ to remember him by, I suppose.
Well, that’s all I got to say about it. Mike Hiss, he was a racer, and he’s gone now. Rest in peace, fella. Hope them cars up in heaven are fast.
