Alright, so I got thinking about rugby the other day. Watched a bit of a match, and those guys look pretty big, right? Made me wonder, what’s the actual average height for these players? It’s not something you just know offhand.

So, my first step was just, well, thinking about the guys I see on the field. They definitely don’t all look the same height. You’ve got some absolute units, proper tall guys, especially when they lift ’em up in those lineout things. Then you see others who look shorter, maybe quicker. So I figured there wouldn’t be just one simple answer.
Next, I did what most folks do these days – I went online. Just opened up my browser and started searching around. Typed in stuff like “average height rugby player”, “how tall are rugby players”, that sort of thing. Got a whole bunch of results, naturally.
Spent a bit of time clicking through different pages. Some sports sites, some forums where people were chatting about it, even some official team pages maybe had player profiles. It was a bit messy, lots of different numbers floating around.
Digging into the Details
What I started noticing was that people kept bringing up the positions. That made sense based on what I was thinking earlier. It seems like height really matters differently depending on where you play:
- Locks: These seem to be consistently the tallest guys on the team. Makes sense, they need to reach high in the lineouts.
- Back Row (Flankers, Number 8): Still pretty tall usually, but maybe more focus on build too.
- Props and Hookers (Front Row): These guys often seem built more like fire hydrants. Strong, heavy, but maybe not always super tall compared to the locks. Centre of gravity matters for scrummaging, I guess.
- Backs (Scrum-halves, Fly-halves, Centres, Wingers, Fullbacks): This seemed like more of a mix. Scrum-halves are often noticeably shorter, needing to be quick around the ruck. Wingers need speed, height can help but isn’t everything. Centres and fullbacks seemed varied.
So yeah, trying to find one single average felt a bit like averaging apples and oranges. The needs of each position are just too different.

So, What’s the Number Then?
Despite the position differences, I did see some general figures mentioned across several sources. If you had to average out the whole squad, forwards and backs together, the number that kept cropping up seemed to be somewhere in the ballpark of 6 foot 1 inch to 6 foot 2 inches. That’s roughly 185 to 188 centimeters.
But like I said, that’s just a rough middle ground. You’ll find plenty of players taller than that, especially in the second row (locks), and definitely players shorter than that, particularly scrum-halves and some wingers.
So, that was my little investigation into it. Started with a simple question watching a game, did some digging online, and found out it’s more nuanced than just one number. Depends a lot on the job they gotta do on the field. Pretty interesting stuff when you break it down.
