Thinking About Team Names
Saw the Pelicans playing the Hornets listed somewhere the other day. It kinda got me thinking, you know?

I remember digging into this whole team name thing a while back. It wasn’t like a big project, just got curious one afternoon. I started just poking around, trying to piece together how these teams ended up with their names, especially since they both involve ‘Hornets’ kinda.
So, what I did was just some basic searching online. Didn’t use any fancy tools, just typed stuff in. I found out that the team in New Orleans, the Pelicans, they weren’t always called that. They actually used to be the Hornets. Yeah, right there in New Orleans.
Then I looked into the Charlotte Hornets. It seems that whole ‘Hornets’ name has a history in Charlotte. I read somewhere it was tied to the American Revolution, like calling the place a ‘hornet’s nest’ for the rebels. Pretty interesting background, I thought.
It seems like when the New Orleans team decided they wanted a name that fit Louisiana better, they picked Pelicans. Makes sense, you see a lot of pelicans down there. And that move, changing their name, sort of let the ‘Hornets’ name go back to Charlotte. So the team there now took it up again.
- First, I just saw the game schedule.
- Then, I remembered the name connection was confusing.
- So, I spent maybe 30 minutes just reading team history pages. Nothing too deep.
- Found the New Orleans change from Hornets to Pelicans.
- Saw the Charlotte Hornets name had history and came back.
It’s just one of those things, right? You see two teams playing, Pelicans vs Hornets, and it triggers a memory or makes you wonder. It’s kinda wild how teams shift and rebrand. You gotta pay attention to keep track of who is who and where they came from.

Anyway, that was my little dive into it. Just thought I’d share what I found when I got curious about those names. Simple stuff, really, but interesting how things change.
