Alright, so I finally got around to checking out that Newcastle golf course over in WA. I’d been hearing bits and pieces about it, mostly that it was a decent spot to actually work on your game, not just play a round. So, I figured, let’s give it a go.

First things first, I made sure to dress semi-respectably. You know how some places can be. I read up a bit and yeah, they like you to look smart casual. So, decent jeans, a collared shirt – nothing fancy, but definitely no ripped or faded stuff. They’re pretty clear that untidy clothes are a no-go. Even for shoes, if you pop into the clubhouse, they’ve gotta be closed-in. Fair enough, keeps the place looking decent, I suppose. Socks were optional with my boat shoes, so that was easy.
Hitting the Range
The main thing I was there for was the driving range. And let me tell you, it’s a pretty solid setup. It’s a big range, plenty of space, so you don’t feel like you’re gonna hit the guy next to you. I saw they had floodlights too, which is great if you can only get out there in the evening. I got myself a bucket of balls, and they were actually good quality – premium balls, they call ’em. None of those rock-hard range balls you sometimes get. The mats were in good shape too, high-quality stuff, not all worn down and uneven. So, I just spent a good while there, working through my bag, trying to get some consistency.
- Grabbed a large bucket, good value.
- Found a bay easily enough.
- The distance markers were clear.
Honestly, it felt like a proper practice facility. They seem to really focus on that “practice” aspect. You can tell they put some thought into making it a good environment for working on your swing. It’s not just an afterthought attached to a course; it feels like a destination in itself if you just want to hit balls.
Quick Clubhouse Look
I did pop my head into the clubhouse briefly, mostly to use the facilities. Remembered the closed-in shoe rule, so no issues there. Seemed like a comfortable enough spot, pretty standard for a golf club. Clean, tidy, nothing over the top.
So, what’s the verdict?

Yeah, I’d say it’s a good spot if you’re serious about getting some practice in. The range is top-notch, balls are good, mats are good. It’s got that “perfect place to practise” vibe without being too stuffy. I’ll definitely be heading back when I need to iron out some kinks in my game. It just works.
