Alright, let me tell you what I got up to the other day. I was digging through some old boxes in the spare room, you know, the kind of stuff you haven’t looked at in years. Mostly old papers, receipts, junk like that.

Anyway, deep down in one box, I pulled out this really thin, kinda fragile booklet. It was an old match programme. Must’ve been from way back, maybe the late 70s or early 80s judging by the look of it. I almost tossed it, but then I saw the teams listed on the front.
The Discovery
One of the teams playing was Romania. Yeah, the national rugby team. Honestly, it stopped me for a second. You hear about the All Blacks, England, France, South Africa all the time. But Romania? It just wasn’t a name that popped into my head immediately for rugby these days.
It got me thinking. I vaguely remembered hearing they used to be quite good, a real tough team to play against. So, I put the box aside and actually looked them up. Didn’t spend ages on it, just a quick search to see what the story was.
Turns out, my memory wasn’t totally wrong. Back then, they really were a force to be reckoned with. They called them ‘The Oaks’. Found out they actually beat teams like Wales and France back in the day. Seriously tough forwards, apparently. That was their thing.
Then, well, things changed over there. Politics, money troubles, the usual stuff that can hit sports hard. Seems like it really impacted their rugby setup. Players went elsewhere, the domestic game struggled. It’s a bit sad, really, when you see a team with that kind of history fade from the top level.

They’re still going, of course. Still playing internationally, trying to climb back up. But finding that old programme, it was just a weird reminder of how things shift. Teams that were once giants become less known. Makes you appreciate the history a bit more, I guess. Anyway, that was my little trip down memory lane, all started by an old piece of paper in a dusty box.
