Alright guys, so today I’m spillin’ the beans on my recent golf outing – Shinnecock Golf Course. Heard a lot about it, seen it on TV, figured it was time to see what all the fuss was about. Let me tell you, it was an experience.

First off, getting there was a mission. It’s out there on Long Island, and traffic was a beast. Left early, like crack-of-dawn early, and still hit some snags. But hey, that’s part of the adventure, right?
Pulled up to the course, and BAM! It’s impressive. The clubhouse is classic, the grounds are immaculate, and you just feel the history oozing out of every blade of grass. Check-in was smooth, grabbed my cart, and headed to the practice range.
Warmed up the swing, felt pretty good, maybe a little too good, you know? That’s always a bad sign for me. Anyway, first tee jitters kicked in, took a deep breath, and let it rip. Ended up slicing it into the rough. Typical.
The Course Itself: This is where Shinnecock really shines. The fairways are tight, the greens are fast and undulating, and the wind… oh, the wind! It’s a factor on almost every shot. You gotta be precise, strategic, and patient. I was none of those things, most of the time.
Some holes were brutal. The par 3s, especially. Long carries over gnarly bunkers, tricky pin placements… they really test your mettle. I lost a few balls in those bunkers, I’m not gonna lie. Sand is not my friend.

There were a couple of holes where I actually played well. Nailed a drive down the middle, stuck an approach shot close, drained a birdie putt. Those moments make all the frustration worthwhile. Keeps you comin’ back for more punishment, I guess.
The Greens: Seriously, these greens are somethin’ else. Fast, slick, and you gotta read ’em perfectly. Even the slightest misread, and your putt is rollin’ five feet past the hole. Three-putted way too many times. Need to work on my short game, that’s for sure.
After the round, grabbed a burger and a beer at the clubhouse. The food was good, the beer was cold, and the view was amazing. Relaxed for a bit, reliving the highlights (and lowlights) of the day.
Overall Impression:
- Shinnecock is tough. Like, really tough. It’ll challenge every aspect of your game.
- The course is beautiful, historic, and meticulously maintained.
- The greens are insane. Be prepared to three-putt.
- The wind is a constant factor. Learn to play in it.
- It’s an expensive round. But if you’re a serious golfer, it’s worth experiencing at least once.
Would I play it again? Absolutely. Even though it kicked my butt, I had a blast. It’s one of those courses that stays with you, makes you wanna improve, and keeps you dreamin’ about that perfect round. Now to start saving up for the next trip…
